Another Ferrari, this time the Ghia Ferrari 340 chassis number #0142AL owned by Tony Parravano and driven by Jack Mcafee/Ernie Mcafee to 5th place in 1952. A heavy Ferrari, it was red not blue and ran with Halibrand wheels, modified Webers and no bumpers. BBR made a big error on their model. The owner Tony Parravano was a mafia figure that spent it seems to much money on Maserati's and Ferrari's and the good things in life. He went on an extended all expense paid vacation compliments of the LA mob in the late 1950's never to be seen again. This was Tonys personal car.

Nice looking model of Ferrari 375MM #0286AM in 1/18th scale by BBR Blue Moon. Now all we need is a 1/24th kit of it. Fisher was working on one along with the Monza/Mondial kits. Maybe someday:)

Found this picture I took in 2002 at the Road America BRIC historical races. Not sure what the chassis number was on this car. It looks like 009/52R.

That's what I thought the owner said, that it was a very good replica....Thank you.

By the way, do you have a good photo of #0428, the black 1954 Pan Americana 750 Monza rebody?? I can only find 3 photos of that car and none show the full car.

Also was the Chinetti entered #0286AM red or black in the 1953 Pan Am? I think it was red but I read that it was black.

More Pan Am chassis updates coming later this week.

Next up....the 1953 Ferrari 4.5 Vignale chassis #0286AM. I can see why the rumor may have started about this car being black in the 1953 Pan Am due to the second photo. Sometimes red shows up looking very dark on older black and white film. The first photo shows the car in Mexico, and it is not black. Unless they painted the car black before the race in Mexico it was a lighter color, most likely red. I am checking color footage from 1953 to confirm. In 1953 the car was a DNF. In 1954 Phil Hill drove it to second place overall with the added D-type style headrest rear wing and several new scoops for brake cooling.

Check out the last 15 seconds of this trailer. Very good quality color from 1954!!

Also at 2:13 on the next video confirmation that #0286AM was red not black in the 1953 Carrera PanAmericana:

Thanks for the trailers, Tom. One more document confirming that the lettering of "Arbesú" and "Mobilubricación" on the Ferraris 375MM #19 and #24 in the V Pan-Am was painted silver, not white.

More pictures of the Talbot Lago T26 chassis number #110 055 driven by Louis Rosier in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana to 5th place. This was the same chassis that won Lemans in 1950. The car was rebodied in 1953 with this Charles Deutsch aero body. It was basically a late 1940's formula one car with a sportscar body. The last picture seems to show white lettering on the inside rear fenders.

Yes, Tom, the letters say "IV CARRERA PANAMERICANA- MEXICO", but the colour doesn't look white to me if compared to the Cognac Bisquit one. Maybe yellow?

That's what I figured it might say. It does not show up well in other photos. I will use some of the other decals to make the lettering. By the way, the decals you sent are wonderful. I
love the accuracy of the 1951 Alfa 2500. I think the lighter yellow might work. On to the next project. I should have bodies and decal sets ready soon for those of you who build 1/24th scale model kits.

I did notice. I think the car must have been a Ferrari support car of some kind. Looks like you have a better photo of the car taken outdoors.

Looks like it was owned by Ernie Mcafee so it must have been brought down as a support car. Maybe he planned on racing it and had mechanical issues???

This thread is being updated to supply the best information on Pan Am cars on the web. Please help us if you have more information on the 1950-1954 Pan Am

Now on to a more complicated car to research, the Pan Americana 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 TI's. From what we have seen they ran 13 cars in 1954. 6 were works cars with 1 extra red spare car. Here is a list of the thirteen Alfa's as researched by Apostolos 1953 the Greek contributor. I only have 6 chassis numbers. If anyone has more information please help us. Below are photos we have found from many sources. I have contacted the owner of the #256 Guatemala car and should have more information on that car soon. It is under restoration now.

Alfa Romeo 1900 TI 1954 Pan Americana list:

    #251 Dark olive green #07743.
    #252 Light grey.
    #254 Black.
    #255 Olive green #07823.
    #256 Dark olive green #07744.
    #257 Mouse gray #07438.
    #258 Black.
    #260 Olive green.
    #264 ???
    #265 Dark blue gray.
    #266 ???
    #267 Light gray #07657.
    #268 Light gray #06245
    Back up car Red.

Sorry for my error that I just noticed. That is an ABC 1/43rd 1900 TI, not a BBR. Another update in a few days with more 1900 information.

Still working on more updates. I did confirm the 1950 Pan Am Alfa Romeo 2500 #90 car was Maroon(I have a color photo of the car). I have to thank Alfa expert Carter Hendricks for his very interesting information on Pan Am/Mille Miglia Alfa's and Lancia's.
