I think I will watch the Imola race again this weekend with Matchett and co commentating. I bet even though I know the ending it will be more fun to watch it with these boys commentating.

You might even get to see some sequences CBS didn't show because of the different times Speed might lay the commercial breaks.

Even my 6 year old Son said he didnt like those two idiots talking during the race.

    I agreed with him 100%.

    CBS coverage was lame.

I agree! I was planning on watching it again just so I could see what I missed. Like the winning ceramony. What the hell was that all about. Okay, let chop this out and go directly to the interview and screw that up to. WTF!

Why can't they be like SPEED and delay the other crap so that the real racing can be watched. Oh wait! Let completely cut everything short so we can cover Golf. Maybe they should stick with that and leave F1 to those who really know what the hell they are talking about. At least the SPEED boys have some humor when they are commentating.

Do you think if I emailed CBS with a link to this thread it would matter to them at all??

Yeah, sure, they'd pull the plug and not televise it at all, we would be watching lady's golf instead..

I watched the Imola race replay on Speed TV the following week after the CBS broadcast.

What a world of difference between the two.

    The primary differences are:
--> Teh commentators know what they are talking about
--> Good sense of humor with them ribbing each other
--> Great team work - one guy is looking at the lap times and such and another is focusing on technical aspects and so on. Very informative. Its obvious that the team gels together very well
--> The broadcast is never condescending at all - there is assumption that the viewer knows a bit of F1 beforehand
    --> No SHOUTING

Maybe the only improvement I can think to the Speed broadcast is perhaps the addition of a more current GP driver to the broadcast team to give a more current feel of the driving dynamics with the T/C and adjustable diff settings and all that. Remember I said addition - don't get rid of David Hobbs - he is too funny!!

I remember watching the 2005 Monaco broadcast on ITV where Jenson joined the regular broadcast team of Martin Brundle and James Allen. Jenson couldnt race as the BAR was banned for carrying fuel ballast in Imola.

Note: Martin was out of the F1 world for the last 10 years and straight away Jenson was making spot on observations about this guy is having problems or that guy is is going to pit well before anyone else noticed. He was making cool observations about the driving styles and such. It was a fantastic broadcast.

And before you ask, I don't have a copy of it on tape. :)

Same with Marc Surer on Swiss TV. That's the part that disappointed me the most with Derek Daily: As an X driver he knows the stuff and should be able to comment that way, yet he has totally sold out to the Barnum circus style of shouting and dramatic announcements ("He crashes over the curbs at Tamburello! He plunges into Rivazza! Imola is brutal and boring!"). I'm sure he knows better, yet doesn't do it. Sad.

I'm not so sure Sullivan is any better though. I don't speak French, but I am quite sure the corner "La Rascasse" isn't pronounced "Rass-Cass"...which Sullivan did say yesterday. :D

If you go to youtube.com and do a search, you can find about a zillion versions of Monaco qualifying, with commentary in dozens of languages.

And you get a huge appreciation of digital quality video. (Speed Channel via DirecTV)

At least the local CBS affiliate went HDTV, so the feed to DirecTV isn't too fuzzy to read the graphics, like it was last year.

Anybody else noticed lack of picture quality - it was hard to see if it was "8" or "9" ? SpeedTV's picture is much better.

It is if you're on digital cable or satellite. An NTSC broadcast channel is band limited. If you have S-video output from your DirecTV box, you're seeing a lot more detail than broadcast.

But when your local CBS affiliate is feeding a broadcast quality signal to your cable provider, digital cable doesn't help after the signal has already been degraded. Speed Channel isn't a broadcast channel, so it starts with a better signal.

This year, the CBS affiliate in DC went HDTV, so they're providing a higher quality feed to DirecTV. Last year, I couldn't even read the lap counter on the CBS races.

I did notice, scanning replays on youtube, that you could see a lot more detail in that infamous Rascasse incident in digital quality than in broadcast quality. On some of those feeds, you couldn't even see the smoke from the front tires, and not even a hint of the rear getting light.

Are they going to run the same Michelin, Geico, etc. commercials for every race? Plus, someone put a sock in Daly's mouth every time he dramatizes some statistic about speed or whatever. :)

Yep. Imagine if CBS had been covering F1 for the last 10 years full time instead of Speed, I probably wouldn't have developed nearly the level of passion I have for the sport. Oh well, thankfully this was CBS's last F1 race of the year.

I think maybe he needs a dictionary: the phrase is that we need to get rid of blockheads in F1 broadcasting. ;)

(Apparently he never heard of the "one move" rule.)

(Hey you: you used to know how to spell F1: you're a comentator.) "Good 'nuff for dumb 'merican drivers", eh?

I was in the paddock after the race, when the FA, MS & KR came out of the interview room they move to a roped off area where to talk to the reporters that are outside. The CBS crew was waiting behind the rope to get to talk to each of them.... The drivers did not know who they were and talked to everybody that was standing in the area but them. When all the other reporters were gone, they finaly walked over and gave them a few words... they looked very out of place !! Deer in the headlight look...sad

I know this is from several races ago, but it is priceless! And still relevant, as Helium Ralph and Derek Dufus were again just pathetic. They are so lacking in knowledge of their own that they had to lift comments made during practice/ quali by Matchett about the shape of the McLaren nose and Varsha about David Purley's crash many years ago. That said, Derek Dufus did have an original thought when he mentioned the "Ferrari V10 in the back of Coulthard's Red Bull". Riiiight.

BTW, my wife is getting p!ssed becasue I'm laughing so hard at this and she's tryin to watch some lame TV show.

    Cheers

At this point even the deaf know that Alonso is Spanish and Schumacher is the 7 time world champion. I doubted both, but thanks to CBS, I don't have to question either point any longer. They made both painfully clear to me. Still, I can't understand why Jenson Button would blow up his own engine. Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Just watched Silverstone on CBS. I don’t understand a few things.
    1. Is Takuma pronounced Takumo?
    2. How is Gilles going to enjoy the race in Canada?
    3. How hard is it to memorize which driver has the red or black paint so they can use the driver’s name? Hell, it isn’t hard to remember who is the number 1 driver for each team.
