BTW, great problem to have.
Thank you guys for all the good comments and insights! There seems to be a general preference for keeping the 365BB. But as several of you have written then there are also other things to be considered in this "dilemma"...... The cars are not bought only for investment. There are mainly ought out of love and for driving, but as I am not "super-rich" in any way then I also need to consider the financial part in this dilemma. Well I need to go into thinking-mode with all of your good comments in mind an then I will make a new post when (if ;-) ) I have decided... Maybe I should just try to sell my kids instead!? Ps. Please just keep comment in you have an opinion - I am still sucking in views....
I was told a long time ago, "go with your gut, it will never steer you wrong". In a sea of traction control and computer dashboards, why not stand out a little? I've worked on and driven newer Ferrari's but me personally, I like the older "analog" cars. With the right guy behind the wrenches they can take long trips and be just as, if not more, fun than some newer models. I have 8, which I proudly purchased because I have kids. I love it to death. The feel is what drove me for an older car. Granted some days power steering and air conditioning would be nice! some things you can't measure on paper. We all own great cars so go with why you purchased them in the first place and see which still brings it's A game everytime you get behind the wheel.
I own a BB so see their plusses and Minuses. My question would start with what other cars you have to drive. Is the one youre left with your only sportscar? What the 550 offers in terms of drive experience can be replicated in any number of other moderns, you could even get used a convertible aston vanatge to cover that base. the Bb experience is hard to come by, the closet cars are somehting like a 288, its a very unique thing. The fusion of everyhtign that makes a calssic ferrari great, with the ability to hack it witht he moderns even on mountain road. Problem with a BB is you get very limited use out of it. They can tolerate hot day, but you cant in them. They are a pain in traffic. So do you have great open roads and cool crisp mornings to enjoy your BB. Which one would you use more often. The 550 baracheta is a car that somehow missed its collectors mark, they simply have not appreciated like their bretheren, say a 599Gto or a speciale. Dont know they just have not. Could be in time they will be reckognised as something special. Meanwhile we know a 365 Bb is collctable and next market run they will be nearing or cresting $1mill. If you use both equally then keep the Bb its bettr bet. If you hardley use the Bb and dont have anotehr modern to drive on those non Bb days and use the 550 more then keep the 550. Financialy the BB seems like it will return more over the next 10 years, its probably moire fun to drive on the right days, but usage opportunities are more limited. When I drive my BB it gets driven as enzo intended, any lesser pace and its a bit of a pain more than a pleasure. Most of my driving takes place in something more modern and useable and durable. I enjoy the BB for what it is, and short of 3 mill for a 288 there is no substitute or replacement. But if I were to have only one sportscar, i am not sure the BB is the one I would keep. In the end it just depends on how much driving you do in each of these cars and what your drivign needs are. Someone here made a comment about keeping both. if you dont need immediate funds then keep both, they are as good an investment as any, and with the ferrari market off 30% and flat, there surely will be better times to sell one or the other. In the end if youre selling now, the 550 baracheta gotta go. There is still a way to have your cake and eat it too, if you still want a convertible ferrari use some of those funds to get a 355 or 360 spider, or if you miss the 550 thing just use some of the funds to get a regular 550 456 or even 612.
I would sell the Sebring and keep both Ferraris. Although people here are clearly no fan, the 550 Barchetta is a very special car. An open top, front engined V12 with manual gearbox. I think they are gorgeous and very unique. The 365 is the best of the BBs so i would keep it as well!
Ah yes didnt see the profile, he has Sebring and lambo 400 2+2. I would sell one of those, they replicate eachother, and he already has a few older cars whereas the 550 is a different experience. I do also agree in time the 550 b will be reckognised as something special. Personaly the Lambo is the one I would sell, its worth more and the type of money he is looking for, the sebring is more unique with the inline 6 or maybe because I had a 350Gt so the maserati seems more inetresting to me now. But the choice in the Ops mind is between the two ferraris so i assume the other two have a special place in his heart, or maybe its as simple as owninig a ferrari a lambo and a maserati, and he has two ferraris. If older cars are his theme the 550 gotta go. Eitehr way, he has impecable taste in cars.
They officially made 448 550 BPF- all model year 2001. According to FML they made 387 BBs over 3 model years 1973-1976 . Then they made another 929 512 BB from 76-81 and 1,007 BBi from 81-84. IF you were to count all these BB cars together they made 2,323. If we use that number then that is vastly more than the supposed 448 550 Barchetta PFs made. If we just look at the original BB then the numbers are close but the BB is rarer. In addition to all of the above good advice and thoughts, I would look at this as between both cars' relative condition. For example, supposing your BB has very low miles and the 550 has high miles. Then it might make sense to part with the low miles one as you will likely cringe with each mile of driving. While we all know that the BBs are special cars, I think it would be foolish to overlook the special attributes in the BPF's corner. The 550 was a return to the classic formula of front engine V12 and it garnered near universal praise. The Barchetta is the first open V12 Ferrari made since the 365 GTB4 "Daytona" Spider and the last of the truly numbered limited Ferraris- each one is "x/448"- subsequent limited cars get a plaque that reads "1 of xxx". Both cars are really pretty in different ways.
A friend of mine owns both of these cars and was considering selling the Barchetta and keeping the 365. To date, he still has both. Both are pretty rare but his 365 has a special history that makes it a tad bit better than a regular 365. What color are the OP’s cars? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
