The windshield on my '83 308 QV took a direct hit from a rock on the way to Concorso Italiano. I now have nine inch crack. A real bummer as it was the original windshield with the California SMOG stickers and everything.

It can't be repaired and has to be replaced. I was going to start calling all the usual places - T. Rutlands. etc) but figured I'd post here to see if anyone had any advice. The replacement is covered by my insurance so I want to make sure I get what will give me the best result.

Also, does anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area have recomendations as to whom to use?

    John

As soon as the new one comes in, have the glass company do a trial fit.

There was some miss-shaped or miss-dimensioned 3x8 glass floating around out there a couple of years ago. Search the Old Fchat archives.

Hmm, Just thought of what may have happened. I believe that the 328 windshield is slightly higher than the 308 windshield. I'm wondering if the glass companies were using a 328 windshield for a pattern w/o realizing that the 308 used a shorter windshield. Or maybe were just shipping 328 windshields out... Don't think we came up with this theory when we were trying to figure out what was wrong.

    John,

I'm sorry to hear about your windshield. As far as the emissions decal, see this thread from two years ago where plans were discussed for a reproduction decal:

Try T. Rutlands. I had to replace the windshield in my 550 this year and saved about $1000 over the dealer with OEM parts.

I had the same problem w/ 355 spider. Glass can be replaced w/ after-market, but sealing can't. Sealing must come from Ferrari, is what I was told by few people I checked. I would suggest using Ferrari dealer to do actual installation.

Let us know what you will or did.

I got my 308 windshield (aftermarket) from Maranello last month for $900 plus shipping. The shipping was $128, I believe. The installer said it required a little extra sealant in the middle. It looks fine to me. I hope you don't need the skinny aluminum trim pieces. They are $950. Mine probably should have been replaced, but I used the old ones.

    Check your insurance.

I found that my insurance (LeLand West) offers a special $70 deductable on glass work.

So it was easy enough to just let the dealership deal with it.

Check the archives - at least some of the aftermarket glass doesn't fit. If the glass doesn't fit your car can be off the road for ??? while you wait on the next glass shipment to arrive (which may arrive broken / won't fit).

Sometimes the moldings can be reused but they are pretty flimsy. FoH added the set of moldings on the repair quote and the insurance company paid it.

The previous owner of my current 308 had bought a brand new windshield, and then had it installed by Euro-Tec motors in Livingston NJ back in late January of this year. First of all the glass does not sit into the frame properly. It sits to deep, like whatever sealant they used just squished out from under it, or there were no spacers or whatever, and additionally the trim does not sit around the glass correctly, there are big gaps, etc. Secondly, it leaks like a sieve. I have leaks along the top by the rear view mirror, and along the center bottom so it runs down the dash and drips on me and the passenger, the console, passenger seat..... I've been thinking about trying to fix it, and I have a good peice of glass I could take out of the other car if by chance I broke it trying to remove it.....

But what about liability? Even though I am not the same owner who had them put it in, shouldnt there be some course of action against them to rectify this? I would always be the first one to accept "caveat emptor" when purchasing something, but this kind of smells to me, especially as how they charged $455 labor to R&R the glass, and another $45 for a tube of Butyl adhesive. I thought they were using a different adhesive these days? But at any rate, thats probably all moot. Anyone have good pictures of a windowless frame, any clips, spacers, etc.., and a good explanation how to R&R the trim? I did a seach but this was about the best thread I found, and the OWM is pretty vague. Euro-Tec did some other work on this car that was equally expensive and of equal quality, in case anyone wanted to know.

Wow, the molding seems to be worth more than the glass these days! I was able to save mine but broke the glass in the process.

they have been selling them for quite awhile. the real complication is the installation. find the best window guy you can find. get the best guarantee and make sure they know if it's not done to your spec you'll expect them to make it right.

But not being factory glass, that may not be correct. I do recall that the 328 windsheild had a black band all the way around the perimeter that the 308 windsheild did not have. Does anyone one else recall this difference?

I don't remember if my old one had the black band but the new one does. The one I got was made by Pilkington who supposedly bought out the original manufacturer (Sekurit I think made the original).

Get it from Ferrari of UK from the owners site. The glass is OEM from Ferrari and it will fit perfectly. You will also need 15 clips & the moulding.

I broke the windshield on my Toyota truck and after replacing it the service guy took a heater like a hair dryer and heated the inspection sticker and just peeled it off and then immediately stuck it on the new glass and it stayed there. Now I don't know if the stickers are the same but you could try. BTW this is illegal the guy said but he trusted me not to tell. So you didn't hear this from me.
