exactly right, same as shifting a non-synchro box. I raced a TR3 in California during my Navy active duty service. Sixty years ago at the SCCA Spring races at Stockton entering the hairpin before the pit straight the clutch blew and I spun; fortunately the car stopped when hedaded in the right direction, and in 2d gear. I finished the race shifting up and down with no clutch, just by slightly lifting the throttle and correctly timing the shift.

    ..............so long ago! ;)

Sounds like a “clutch” performance :). That’s what life is all about. Unforgettable moments.

Ok, that helps. So it's like a manual. You can drive it smoothly if you know how; you can beat it to death; or anything in between. :)

PDK much different since the throttle is fly by wire, rev match and all that controlled by the TCU.

The thing I like about it is you can use both feet just like the f1 drivers of the early 90s

Every watch NASCAR on TV? They used to have an in car camera that showed the driver's feet. Left foot on the brake, right on the gas. Didn't use the clutch to shift. Clutch was for starting, stopping and doing burnout if you win. :)

    Nice video. Great timing.

I could be wrong but I think the commentator made a few errors explaining the technique.

He first says the driver blipped the throttle and downshifted to 3rd in an earlier sequence. Didnt see him reach for the lever at that moment to do any shifting.

In another sequence as the driver was downshifting from 4th to 3rd, the commentator explains the driver blipped the throttle before reaching the lever to shift to 3rd. Unless Nascars are setup differently, this discription could very well be inaccurate although the driver does it so fast and smooth its hard to tell.

The sequence is lift off throttle, reach for lever, shift into neutral, blip (rev match) then shift into 3rd. So its not blip first (you shouldn’t be able to blip with the transmission in gear) then shift. Driver does a superb job with timing to make it seem like its all in one motion. But you’ll see him lift off throttle and reach for the lever at the same time.

Best video I could find on the fly. I recall watching drivers both up and down shifting w/o clutch, particularly on road courses.

Unfortunately, NASCAR has gone down hill over the last decade.

You don’t have to shift into neutral as you down shift to rev match in a 1-2-3 fashion.... you blip throttle as you pull it out of 4th into 3rd passing thru neutral gate in one smooth motion..... it happens so fast. Not easily done in synchromesh standard gearbox for most road going cars. Purpose built Richmond style race transmission, pretty easy with practice and experience.

When I am warmed up and in practice on an 18-speed hi/low class 8 truck trans, you would never know I was up or down without watching the gear selector if you could not here truck. Never touch clutch after start out. Gawd I love that! So much fun to drive. Every truck and trans different. Takes me about 3-5 days to know and feel truck, engine and trans. Last few rental trucks were all 10 speed autos and wow, what a well designed system. Boring, but keeps it in the power without thinking. I was pretty good, but some guys - hell most old truckers would walk all over top of me “floating” the gears. Sure is fun though.

There were several venues for the Port of Stockton races, I raced my Merlyn MK6A at two of them. In one I was leading when Harry Banta rear ended me parking his Genie's left front wheel over my right rear.

I raced the Merlyn for about four years, all over California. Laguna, Stockton, Cotati, and one time at an abandoned Army base in Pittsburg Ca. Image Unavailable, Please Login

This pic is of another Merlyn I raced in Vintage racing. I bought and restored it to be an exact replica of the one I bought new in 1964.

Yes. This is what I meant. The blip occurs after you move out of 4th and right before going into 3rd. The blip occurs at the neutral point of the transition. Not supposed to stay into neutral for long. One smooth motion.
