The periscope cars represent the true essence of the countach design for me. The wing, while it may add more drama, detracts from all of the geometric angles on the rear of the car......so off it comes.....and maybe even get a little more rear visibility too!

I'm trying to figure out how those photos were taken? I go-pro attached to the window and a still frame taken. a passenger in a right hand drive car. im assuming even if you have the balls to take a Countach to 180ish mph you aren't taking hands off the wheel to take a photo.

    You are absolutely right!

Two different cars, the first one is LHD, the second one is RHD, both images taken by passengers BTW.

This thread is progressing as the previous one on the same subject did not too long ago https://www.lamborghinichat.com/forum/threads/countach-wing-or-no-wing.590952/ wherein No Wing had of 41 votes versus 31 votes for the Wing (Sometimes & Sometimes Not received 25 votes). That result surprised me, as is the way this one is progressing, because I understand that after decades of seeing the wing on Countachs, many people thought it was an official Lamborghini component or that it was beneficial to the car in terms of performance. Even though the wing is still very popular and is understandably very much identified with the Countach, these threads show that there is some appreciation for the lines of Gandini's design without it, if not for any question about it's function.

Joey's comment in that thread is another good brief perspective https://www.lamborghinichat.com/forum/posts/146362097/

I see no problem with keeping a wing on a Countach if it came that way when new, or if the owner simply likes it, or, if the car has special provenance that identifies it with the wing.

For example, the Cannonball Run movie Countach LP400S S2 should obviously stay as it is with both wings (3 wings actually if you count the rear lower unit posing as a bumper) and all 12 exhaust tips because that is exactly the specification it was as used in the famed Hollywood movie, in other words this legendary car's provenance calls for it's current specification to be preserved.

Another group of Countachs that should always have the wings affixed are of course the Walter Wolf Countachs, because their wings were developed, made & applied by Gian Paolo Dallara, a trained aeronautical engineer & aerodynamicist, who wnet on to be a World Championship-winning race-car chassis designer. His wide-buttressed 'Moody' wings had an effect upon the car's high-speed handling as requested by Wolf whose cars are the wing Godfathers which influenced all other winged Countachs.

IMO it depends on the colour of the car. A white Countach with wing looks nice. A red, black or silver one don´t a wing. But thats my opinion!

    You are correct.
i talked about the 400S only
but there should also be 1 or 2 early 5000S with similar set up

front and wing and rear boomerang bumpers are the same as on my car and black cannonball run movie car

the front wing mount is slightly different Though...you can open the front bonnet with wing on, while on the 400S cars you need to remove wing to open

but for the rest looks the same: i think also done by Lambo North America

  14. I think the trend has slowed down to a crawl. Maybe stopped? As I said in that thread, many were removed due to wing corrosion & cracks. We all know how hard, once they are damaged, especially corroded, they are to fix. A foam core. This site prefers no wing, however several other poles done elsewhere, like fb, had a strong preference for the wing. The general public loves the wing. I can't tell you how many females have come up to my car, and the one thing they touched was that wing (however I have never seen a guy do that). Those with a wing, watch for it next time.

One benefit is more stability at speed. Yes top speed is less, but control is more up to that point. Very, very few want to be in any car at these speeds.

Another that should be preserved with the wing is the LP400S1 #1121026 (ex Armin Johl ...), which was installed by the factory and could be adjusted electronically by a switch placed on the dash ......
