    I fear that if that was his only intention his friend could contact the local Ferrari club and arrange this simple request. I think there is more to it then simply that unfortunately.

    I think if that were the case, he wouldn't be asking about finance or mentioning a non-driver from a junk yard. Sounds like he's trying to buy the old guy a 308 which really does not make sense - especially if it doesn't run.

    Unless the old guy just "wants to have owned a Ferrari 308".
