Update: We are clearly black from the beginning; no sign of anything under the paint.
Ours look like daytonaman's; and a really crap paint job; uneven, with runs.

Well, that can’t be correct.
Last I read they’re supposed to be “always oatmeal”.
    Just ask the experts.

Not rusting though Ed as it’s an alloy tank, some of the seams had a tiny weep, and there was another drip where the spare wheel tyre had been rubbing on the tank [ worth checking your spare wheel tyre for this].

In the end we did not use the new tank as it did not have the correct spout for a spyder and Mike did not want to butcher it. It sat on the shelf in my garage for years and then I think I sold it at a loss on ebay. It’s amazing how when you buy these rare parts they cost a fortune, and when you try to sell them no one wants them!!

Do you anticipate pulling yours for a repaint?
PS I am STILL trying to make the Seymour wrinkle paint work; it seems to be very sensitive to everything and anything................................

Might also be worth to keep in mind that the insulating/protective coating, regardless of its composition or structural color, doesn’t always appear to have had any paint originally applied on top of it, but majority or perhaps even all seem to have the typical yellow-chromate primer-sealer under it.

It is 'oatmeal', same as Dino. Ferrari got a massive discount on the stuff.
    That is why NLA :)

You still can get the Wurth stuff, apply it, then paint it. It works.

Yes, while I think the black over-paint was done pretty early in the car's life, I also think that best-case it was done by the dealer, and not the factory.

Yeah, the wrinkle is a challenge; as I said in the other thread, my final conclusion was that for a coarse pattern, you have to put the pattern on the part in some way, so that the wrinkle will then follow it.

For the life of me, I don't know how Ferrari managed to get all those steering-column shrouds to be so uniform...

    Hi Alberto,

My coating is actually in pretty good shape, so if I were inclined to use a paint, I would just paint over the black paint that is there now.

I might do that if I can't source the coating that is actually beige...

    We shall see...
