I think one of your cars must have a CO leak in the cabin ... ;)

I don't sense any tanking of prices just quite yet but I think you're on to something for Espadas at least. Really sub par cars are not as hot now.

Not exactly that, rather a NOx leak, specifically nitrous oxide ... :D.

That indeed helps? I will try it out :D.

no, he didn't pay far too much... he is just wondering to find gold stones in his garage like many others before him...

So he is lucky and presumably not only that.

Recalling some cars I looked at in Essen last spring, at least some might turn out as fools gold. As soon as the guys with money, but without knowledge, leave the scene again as fast as they had turned up ...

Oh without a doubt Bernhard. We may love the exotic quirkiness and unique design of an Espada but I have little doubt that once this fever goes down these will once again be the outcasts they once were. They will be among the first to drop steeply in price. No one will want the ones that have not been restored.

That won't happen to Miuras and probably not the 350/400 GTs though I'm not sure why as they languished for years and years. But now that so much investment has been made in them perhaps not. Isleros???? I like them but are they that unique or fantastic looking? meh. Countach & Miura yes and in spades!

Considering that nothing out there is like an Espada and never will be, the prices will go up over the years, my perception.A few reasons would be: a true thoroughbred from the golden days of Lamborghini with Ferruccio, Bertone, Miura, etc. That well known V12 naturally aspirated with 6 Webers and the original design of the car, also a very practical car.
Plus car magazines of the day always preferred the Espada over the Ferrari 365 2+2 and even the 1976 Ferrari 400, so it must be a good driving car as well.

You like the rest of us are a fan. I was smitten way back in the 70's when I first observed one trundling through the financial district of SF as I rode a cable care. But ... it doesn't have the magic marketplace ingredients to make it a long term highly prized vehicle IMHO. I bought one anyway!

Bob, what do you consider to be the essential market attributes for long term appreciation?

Although I am Bernhard, not Bob, I may offer a hypothesis. Four seaters were not really appreciated in the past and will not be in the future (I believe). Furthermore, ragtops seem to be clearly preferred over closed cars. Finally, the Espada will probably always stand in the shade of the Miura and the Countach, kind of a poor mans Lamborghini (nowadays!). Insofar too "complicated" for most speculators ....

    Cheers, Bernhard

P.S.: I bought one anyway as well :D. But at a time when the price was on a level that you always would have had the option to sell it in parts and still make no loss, maybe even a profit. I simply like the design and this is so since long.

I wish I really knew? At the moment a couple of cars I selected are up in the market place.
But as previously stated I don't expect that to last really. When I bought my Bora in 86 I was looking for something Italian and exotic and I passed on a freshly rehabbed Miura S complete with an onboard fire system! THAT caught my attention ... It was at less money than I paid for my Bora so don't look to me for long term advice on how to pick them.

    It's a gorgeous "looking" car. That's all I'll say.

The Bora is much rarer and more sophisticated from an engineering standpoint buy not nearly as bad boy. It had a different purpose. It's a gorgeous car as well but not droolingly so like a Miura is.

They only thing I can nail as the one attribute a car must have is ... people wanting one of them really, really bad at sometime in the future. :D

And even that doesn't always last or at least it swings up and down a lot.

I almost bought a Khamsin too but hated the steering. That is another gorgeous car that's been undervalued and like the Bora it still is. The dash is bleh for me though. A second shot at the design of that would have benefitted the car greatly IMHO. The body and everything else is to die for. It's up too for the moment but not suitably so either.

The "catfish of Lamborghinis" :D though much less so right now though and I think they have garnered greater respect in the last 4 or 5 years.

For me it defines the term extoic in cars.

To answer an early question yes it does drive well, save the manual steering which is horrific at low speed. So get an electric steering conversion! It drives and rides much better than say a Ghibli or Indy because of the far superior suspension and of course it's much more comfortable than the Miura as well. That car I found quite darty and I don't really fit. My size 12 feet are too big as is my 6'1" frame. I'm a bit tight for legroom in the Bora s well. No such issues in an Espada, Ghibli or Khamsin.

I do wish the Espada had rack&pinion steering.

I'm sure if there are or are not perforation holes in that interior?

Since I am having my interior redone with the perforations (and the related costs), I clearly opt for the position that the perforations have been applied in all cars (and thus thereby discriminating the cheap interiors without them) ...... *looool* ;).

Next issue: The perforations in the backs of the front seats, have they always been misaligned as if made by a heavily drunken guy? Or was the responsible person not drunken at some times at least? I opt for the latter in this case, since I am having them made in straight and parallel lines ..... ;).

    Cheers, Bernhard

Yes, and if you want have them made absolutely as original, the pencil lines have to be visible also!

Quality was clearly not the hallmark at that time.

If you want the front seat backs perfed with a uniform pattern call me.

Otherwise drink a bottle of lambrusco and punch away! :D

For recreating the factory quality standard of the seat back perforations, this will presumably not be sufficient, if "a" means "one" .... :D

I liked the pencil mark remark :D, indeed these seem to be essential for originality :D. Fortunately easily done, in case that the interior guy misses this important detail :D.

Ah, that makes me trouble about the kind/type of pencil needed. Any recommendations?

If you knew the amount of delay and angst I went though for those GD back of the seat perfs! I finally just said screw it! The perfs don't align up with the large "ventilation" holes in the seat frames anyway. It's all a sham. The hardware and steel seat frame used in these seats is utter cheapo stuff too. The track hardware is Fiat 124 and as installed digs into the upholstery leather in two spots. I spent $500 modifying the seat tracks to eliminate that and strengthen the track mounting to the floor so that they don't just separate from the floor pan during an accident. This happened to a well know VLG member years back. A couple of the square nut inserts in those flimsy mounts were srtipped on mine!

I also made repairs to the seat back frames so that the rough metal wouldn't telegraph through the leather like it did so badly on the originals ... I also added a layer of upholstery felt on the back.

So ... shortly after deciding to forgo those very, very special star shaped holes my vendor announced he finally had a solution. But it figures ...

None of this was his fault, he's a terrific guy. It just took a while for his machine tool vendor to come up with a workable solution for his CNC perforating machine tool.

I had already lost almost a year with an upholstery shop that kept delaying me and then utilized my largish deposit to fund his business cash flow issues.

    In grade school we typically used a #2 but I think I'd use a #1. :D

I never could clean that pencil off on my original leather. Before you think about hand punching them count how many you have to do and accurately as well. That star must be rotationally positioned perfectly or it will look like crap, original! :p That was the big issue with the CNC machine as he was used to doing round holes. Then you have to get it aligned on the pattern as well. It's a lot of GD holes. I've seen the work coming out of the Italian vendor these days ... it's "original". ;)

    Good morning

Last time a drove my 1972 S2 2 weeks ago, the odometer and the speedometer broke. I am trying to find out how to fix it. When i try to search in this web, they show one answer: Espada thread. I read all the 200 pages once and i cannot do it again. Can anybody tell me "how difficult" it is to replace the cable?

    thanks
    Alberto
