so first my appologies to Gus for not calling him back just one busy day....... So problem points to points. The particular set of points i bought wore down after less than 200kms???? Its seems the composition may be more plastic than resin ? so installed now are mirellis and timing reset . then i had the adventure of driving home in the rain and to my delight no leaks after all new rubbers etc etc... Car runs much better and even cooler !! mind you its not 32c like it was last week. the saga continues . I will not say on this thread where i purchased my points as the gent is that, a gent, and until i have a chance to speak direct to him it would not be fair. Gary 8394
Auction is over - does anyone know if it sold or was ended early? just curious to know I like them original and a little rough =)
damn Gary she's just gorgeous in that pic but looks even better in person...the Queen of the ball she was at the car show that night ! Good to hear that points issue seems to be fixed now...I would drive her near your house evry night till you can be sure the problem is solved before going on long runs...
Espada dudes : Thanks for your kind words. Got my first ,wave me off the road almost , stop me and excalim, what the F is that , the other night . that was fun! In a gesture of originality I am thinking of the original brown as you see above for the interior. I am working with Valentino on shipping the leather over to italy for perforations. At first I was all gung ho to do a tan interiot but somehow this retro brown is growing on my against the red.... and besides i dont want it ending up looking like a Ferrari. Your thoughts , comments about dark red (Rosso Barchetta)over brown are most welcome Gary 8394
I think a momentous decision such as this one can't receive a worthwhile reccomendation over the internet. An evaluation of your car in person is required. I think there are going to be 2 Espadas and at least one Jarama at Le Belle Gary. All cars you haven't seen before so why not make it 3 if it's roadworthy by then? That comes first! Or just bring yourself and observe. There will some great vintage cars on the track this year. Alfas, Maserati and Ferrari and ??? It's a new vintage race series. Another option for the interior is the senape. That's not really tan and the senape in my car which you saw last year is 38 years old. It's like a very light mustard hence senape. Not very yellow at all. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So another car show tonight about 40 mins north of me and then upon arrival i was hot, over 110c hot and as i was about to park in real slow car show traffic it started spitting coolant from the overflow hose attached to the overflow tank . Lost 3 litres in total and refilled with distilled water to get me home. what an emabarrasing entrance to a street festival ! Back in the fall I was told the rad was fine just had the neck reweleded and a flush and flow test . WTF !so new engine, new water pump, good rad ? two fully functional fans , new thermostat with Otter switch aren't enough i guess FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK me. New set of eyes is in order at this point. Gary
what happens if I take the thermostat out? what should the cap be rated at? and should the pressure releif cap be on the rad or the overflow tank? gary 8394
Gary, The pressure release cap should be on the expansion tank and a plain cap goes on the radiator. I got an original cap from GTCP for my radiator! (about $12.00) I expect the rest of the bushings for my front end to arrive Monday or Tuesday! I don't expect the Espada to be out of commision for much longer than a week while I paint and rebush the arms as well as the Koni's. I'll keep you posted. Gus
Fresh eyes, great idea. But checking the thermostat is realtively quick. Did your latest engine service or the work at Bobileff motors include a new thermostat? You can carefull pull the hose off but notice that the pipe is not supported very well. I haven't tried unscrewing mine as yet. That long unsupported pipe makes me kind of nervous though. I see no reason leaving it out will cause you a problem right now. In the winter, not a good idea. I hope it's this simple and let us know how it works out. Just like Gus says, you need a plain cap on the radiator Gary. You can put a cap from a Jag like the XKE on the radiator. I picked one up locally for $10 but they're under $5 on the internet from a whole host of Jag parts dealers. http://www.bpnorthwest.com/.sc/ms/dd/Jaguar%20E-Type--Cooling%20System/10089/Radiator%20Cap%20XK140%5E2F150%2C%20E-Type%20to%2064 Looks and fits perfect. I'm running a 7lb cap on the reservoir tank. When I got my car the PO had a 7lb cap on the radiator and a 13lb cap on the reservoir. It was an Interesting idea ... But wrong. The early cooling systems are not a very good design IMHO but even so you'rs shouldn't be doing this. Bob S.
These are also a cool idea that may finds its way onto my Countach and Urraco. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=thermostat+radiator+cap&_sacat=See-All-Categories
thanks guys Bob I purchased a new thermostat from Gary Last summer when all my troubles started. I am a little confused still? Currently i have a flat non operating cap on the rad and a 7lb cap on the overflow tank. If the rad has a bypass overflow tube (leaving from the neck of rad)going to the overflow tank and the overflow tank spits coolant to the ground feeely upon boil over what is the 7 lb pressure releif cap on the overflow tank for? and when will it ever come into use if i have just described an open path to the ground??? Also the manual indicates a 13lb cap for radiator?? Gary
Then I doubt your thermostat is the issue. You could of course take it just to be sure. Well in your most recent adventure what was the temp gauge doing? If your manual says a 13lb cap then switch. Also, when it spat the coolant recently was it after you'd been driving harder and then were parking the car? What was the outside temperature. Were both fans on? I just lost my thermal switch (otter) last fall as I parked on my friends newly paved driveway and the damn thing puked a bit when I stopped. As you say, a most gracioius introduction. More like a new puppy ... My gauge was very normal too. The system will always vent excess pressure but it certainly shouldn't be puking coolant unless you over filled it? The cap on the radiator seals on the top edge so the the overflow elbow feeds the reservoir tank via that hose whereas the thermostatically functioning cap on the reservoir tank seals at the base of the neck BEFORE the overflow elbow and only allows coolant&air out if the valve opens. My car is 39 years old so I can't say it's normal but my reservoir tank has usually been either empty or very low when cold and fills about half way when it gets hot. Ask some other SII owners as well.
I'm sorry, pretty much any of them. It is called the Mr Gasket Thermocap. Last I looked the had domestic one and import ones. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=thermocap&_sacat=0&_dmpt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&_odkw=thermostat+radiator+cap&_osacat=0&bkBtn=&_trksid=m270
so i took it out today and let it idle to see at what point the thermostaically operated fan can on........ not til 110c so i think thats a problem and my manual fan does not work now at all (the traffic fan). I'll get that fixed in short order but i think i read somewhere the thermostically controlled fan should come on BEFORE 80C? Bob I lost 3 litres of colant on Friday while waiting to park idling at a car show after a hot run on the highway (all ness elements to cause excess temps) but i think i still have a problem as it should never get this hot. gary
Gary, If I read correctly, your fan switch on the radiator is not working. My fan kicks on at 60c. Even when in traffic on a 95 degree day, I never need the auxilary fan. I would try GTCP for the part. You can test the switch by removing it, placing it in a pan on the stove with a continulity tester hooked to the terminals and heat it while monitering the temp with a cooking thermometer. Since you are not married, you should not get any crap for using the kitchen utinsils for this. Gus
Gary, I am talking about the switch that is located on the radiator, the automatic switch that should kick the fan on when the coolant temp gets over a certain point. My fan kicks on at 60c. I am at home now and I would have called you back but the caller ID didn't get the number. Gus
Gary, It sounds like you need to get the operation of your fans in order. The Otter switch is the thermostatically controlled one. It is in the top of the tank in the radiator. It controls only one fan. For some reason Lamborghini only has one fan come on automatically. Most modern car don't do this. I just posted some info about this on a thread in the Maserati section if you want find a new Otter style switch. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=286192 The trouble with the Lamborghini design is that they have the power to the fans controlled by the ignition switch that operates a relay to supply power to them. Then, the Otter switch controls the ground connection to the rh fan. So it has to support the full current load of the motor. As you will see from the thread I mentioned there are alternatives to the the Otter style switch but they don't support the full current load of that fan motor. You have to install another relay which actually would help the life of the Otter switch as well. The lh fan is controlled by the fan switch on the dash. It's not that hard to modify your wiring so that both fans come on via the thermostatic switch on the radaitor as well as haveing both come on via the dash switch. That's what I'd reccomend given the marginal nature of the cooling system on these old cars. That way when you encounter a situation that can cause a sudden temperature rise, like being stuck in traffic, you can switch both fans on before anything gets too hot. But making just it work correctly as per the original design is easy enough. Bob S.
UGO the 78 year young x lambo factory mechanic says i need a rad . got the fans working and still way too hot . thermostat and otter switch good ........ Gary 8394
