Been having a few sunny days here so have been driving with both windows down when its nice enough. I regularly drive with my drivers side window open (especially through tunnels!) but have noticed my car sounds different under load with the passenger window open. First of all when putting my foot down I get an injection kind of noise. For lack of a better description it sounds like the noise spaceships shoot at each other in sci fi movies! I'm assume this is a fuel pump or something as its directly related to my right foot. Does everyone else have this?

Secondly though, and more worryingly, as the revs build I get a rattle noise which sounds like a heat shield might be loose, followed by the exhaust noise which sounds far more baffly and rough than the noise the exhaust makes with just the drivers side window open. It reminds me of an old merc I used to own where the cat had gone and the exhaust note wasn't as smooth as it should be. I've only had an MOT recently and the emissions were very good apparently, as opposed to the merc where it failed due to the cat.

I've checked the exhaust valves to ensure one side isn't sticking shut or something but both valves are disconnected and working all ok as I like it. I can't understand what these noises could be a surely with one back box the sound sould be identical from either side of the car but it is definitely not the case. The driver's side sounds perfect in comparison with all stock parts apart from the valves disconnected.

If anyone has any advice I would be really appreciated. I haven't had a chance to take off the undertray of my car yet but hopefully will do sometime soon just to have a nose!

Could be the exhaust tips rattling. Mine did this at around 3k rpm.

the exhaust sound difference happened to me when my manifold was cracked.

    Could be:
    1. Exhaust valves. They may be failing one one side causing both rattle, and a difference in exhaust noise from side to side.
    2. Could be a vacuum leak in said valves
    3. Could be a failing / failed header
    4. Could just be the tips as steelej mentioned

Because you have modified your valves you should check your modification and the spring tension.

    Unlikely but possible:
    5. CAT failure / partial failure

Remember you get some of your "exhaust" sound via your intake runners. With your windows down you can get a lot of sound from the runners, as I have shown in my DIY to "tune" the runners for maximum symphony.
    6. Intake runner leak, disconnected
    7. Air filter issue

That "intake noise" that you describe when you first hit the gas is totally normal. The intake is right by your ear on the drivers side. When you hit the gas, the butterflies open up and there is a gush of air abruptly rushing into the engine, that's what you are hearing. At higher RPM's it is making the same noise, but you don't hear it because the engine is screaming at the same time.
Here is an older thread with what I believe to be the same question that you are asking:

Thanks guys. I'll check my exhaust tips and reconnect my valves to check them later today. Hopefully its one of those simple things that I can fix myself and makes my day at the same time. As for the other options, can I check for leaks in my manifold myself even without jacking the car up? I have no obd codes showing but from a bit of a read I take it they might be cracked and just not throw a code?

Also with regards to the intake noise, yes that does sound like what I am hearing. Where is the noise coming from exactly though and how come its only on one side? I don't think it originates fron the inlet mainfold on the top of the engine and also if it was this wouldn't the noise be symetrical?

    Thanks again
