I am in the process of having a fairly extensive engine rebuild including rebuild the heads with all new guides and valves, 2 new cylinder sleeves, all new rings, rod bearings, in addition to all the typical belt service items plus some other misc.... I have enjoyed seeing the inside of the engine up close and figured I would share some pictures.....

Looks Great! By any chance is it David Feinberg's shop in Bedford? Looks like his well organized clean work!

Yes David of Ferrari Service of Bedford is doing all the work. He's is a great guy that does phenomenal work. It also doesn't hurt that he only lives a mile away from me! He was instrumental in helping me finding my 355.

How long have you owned the car? I know Dave does excellent work, but if he helped you find this car and then it needs extensive engine work that's not a great endorsement. New guides, valves, two liners? Unless you have abused the car or owned it for a long time that stuff should have shown up in a PPI. Are the headers shot too? Why were the liners shot? That kind of stuff doesn't happen over night. I'm sure Dave will get it right but at what cost?

No, I am not. I'm asking valid questions and making a valid point. Dave is from my neck of the woods and I know he has an excellent reputation. I'm curious how the car got in this condition. Who did the PPI?

I started this thread to share pictures that I thought others would appreciate, but since someone asked perhaps I should clarify. My car is a 96 spider that had 32,000 miles on it when I bought it. I had searched for a couple of years for it as I had some specific cretiera: I wanted Red/ Tan spider 6 speed with a Capristo exhaust already installed. I found this car that had the typical service from previous owners. However, I knew that I would have to more than likely do some major service work to the engine. Since I bought the car right I was fully prepared for all this, matter of fact I preferred to buy a car like this and then have a top notch shop do the work so i know for sure that it was done correctly and not rely on old invoices from someone I didn't know. I am doing more that just the engine work, all the shocks are being rebuilt, I installed a new leather dash and fixed all the sticky parts as well. I plan on having the car for a long time and want to make sure it is well sorted...So there is the background... More pictures to follow....

I was interested in the history because, knowing Dave's reputation it seemed like a contradiction to say he helped you find this car and then seeing all this necessary work. But it appears you knew that going in, and was reflected in purchase price, and that was the part of the story was missing. Thanks for the clarification.

Do you have, or did Dave tell you what he though cause the liners to go bad? Did it have OE headers that had failed?

Evidently the #2 and the #7 cylinders are known to run hot due to the cooling characteristics of the engine. I do not know if the car ever had a header failure or not but the Nikasil coating in those two cylinders were worn to the point that they needed to be resleeved. All the other cylinders were in perfect condition.

Based on your long term plan and David's fine work I am sure you will have an exceptional F355. I am about an hour away north of Boston. Black/Black F355 spider. Inside cylinders are problematic. I had to replace #3 and #7! My 355 did have header and cat failure early in its life.

Love to see these shots, thanks for sharing. Mine is in the shop undergoing an engine out and I hope to see a few from mine too. Shop is very reputable, although the work is not as extensive, I am enjoying seeing the details here.

Man I love these engines. I'm picking up a 355 (eventually) almost specifically to work on this engine. I've always loved 5 valve concept/design.

Keep the pics coming. More is more

Valve seating surfaces look awfully pitted. Wonder what the cause was. Even with good guides those valves would not seal well.
