I have a 2007 F430 and wanted to share with everyone all that I have learned about the 1741 and 1742 error codes, along with the potentiometers themselves. I had a 1741 error with the F1 light on and weird shifting (falling out of gear and getting stuck in Neutral).

I purchased the Ricambi potentiometers here:

    248095 GEARBOX POTENTIOMETER - F430, 575, 599, 612, GRANTURISMO - Ricambi America, Inc.

I started the process to change these two sensors. I removed the rear diffuser and left the bumper on. I have S-Line exhaust and didn't need to remove the exhaust or aftermarket cats. I then removed the heat shield and all of the screws on the actuator. I finally wiggled the actuator out and pushed the cat aside a little to pull it down. I removed the sensors in this order:

The one labeled SHIFT (this is the 1742 error code issue) was unscrewed. Next, I unscrewed the one labeled GEAR (this is the 1741 error code issue sensor). Then I removed the plate to which they are connected. I replaced these and then had a 1742 error code with a flashing N. The SHIFT sensor broke. I ended up using the new GEAR and old SHIFT sensors by splicing them together.

A good link for removal and replacing is right here:

    So here is my advice:

    1. Be sure to install the one labeled GEAR properly.
    2. Remember to also twist in the second one. I didn't do this, and the new sensor broke.
    3. If you ever have N blinking, it is because the 1742 SHIFT sensor is jacked up.
    4. You can splice a sensor and mix / match old / new sensors to Frankenstein them together.
    5. Be sure to install these correctly or you will probably be buying a new set like I am about to do for another $800 to ensure these are installed correctly.
    6. Remember to perform a relearn using your software. I have a really inexpensive one that works pretty well - can't beat it for just over $100 (Amazon.com: Thinkdiag OBD2 Scanner Bluetooth, All System Bidirectional scan Tool OE Level Diagnostic Tools with ECU Coding,15+ Service Functions All Software 1 Year Free fits for iPhone & Android : Automotive)

If anyone needs any help with these two sensors, please feel free to message me as I am a professional now. And a great big THANK YOU to @flash32 for all his help.

    Hi guys
    O have a F430 2005.
In My car, sometimes it starts the “n blinking” error with only 1 and 2 gears, and disappear. Sometimes it works well. If the car is hot, its very difficult to start the error. I cleaned up the potentiometer, what make the error almost desappear. Bbut I still experience some episodes. Any idea?

I would recommend you open a new thread and describe your problem in more detail so others can jump in but from the two sentences that you mentioned above a guess would be that your sensors are going and they need to be replaced
