The Jet Stream works both directions, as we all know. Pay me now or pay me later.

On a flight to London last October I was surprised to see a cruising speed of 668mph on one of these babies. I touched down in Gatwick a little over 6 hours from NYC.

Our flying time from JFK-CDG last month was 5hr 15mins due to ultra strong tailwinds - average of over 120mph the entire way. Was too short to really enjoy the flat bed seat as the plane was "lights out" for maybe 2 hours between dinner and breakfast services.

I once took a BA 747 from JFK to LHR with a heavy tailwind for the entire flight that made the plane feel like it was riding on a rough road (like cobblestones) but did not interfere with cabin walking. We arrived over London a full hour early but had to circle for around 40 minutes because they were not ready yet for us at Heathrow!

Jim, my wife and I had the same thing happen at Heathrow except in reverse. We were on a UAL 747 SP that was ready to take off but held for an hour because of heavy incoming traffic. The pilot told everyone not to worry about making connections in Seattle because, " This airplane can make up the time." It did with some to spare. It was a beautiful flight over Iceland and northern Canada, clear all the way to landing.

Is that the fastest commercial airliner (except Concorde)?

I've heard the 747 is the fastest and the SP is the fastest 747.

The old Convair 880 was about the only thing that could hold a candle to a 747 SP, and it was a commercial failure. Its limiting Mach (0.89) was lower than some of the 747s, too. Basically powered by non-afterburning J79s.

Last week I was on a 777 from Hong Kong to SFO. Just over 10 hours thanks to the Jet stream

Going over was over 14 though!

I like the Dreamliner as well. I did LAX to Melbourne in 15:45 minutes on one. Didn't really mind it.

Seems spacious inside and has lots of overhead space. I like the large windows with electronic shades too.

I'm pretty certain that the 990 was faster, with the anti-shock bodies on the wing trailing edge and the engine upgrade to turbofans. Does anyone know for sure?

Researching the web shows a M .912 max. for the 990. The SP was .92 to .93. I have known several pilots that flew the SP and they all loved it for its maneuverability, speed, and plain (plane?) enjoyment. The 747 SP didn't have to be pushed to hard to attain a high Mach cruise.
