    Please come for a visit. You have lots of friends here. Drove my 575HGTC from HK to Xian with my son over the Easter weekend - about 2,000kms one way. Scenery was spectacular

    So good to hear you doing that. Isn't working on the car great therapy? You have to be careful with that spare wheel as it enters the trunk at an awkward angle so watch you dont strain your back.

    By the way, you may see a USA F40 in HK in the very near future, courtesy of some recent (Prancing) horse trading facilitated by yours truly.

    In the middle '80's, I regularly attended Joe Marchetti's June Ferrrari meets at his farm in surburban Chicago. I took many slides that I am finally sorting so I can have them digitized. One set that is not clearly dated is the event at which Joe introduced the 288 GTO by surrounding it with hay bales and pulling the bales down to make a grand entrance. Joe also convinced Brian Brunkhorst to bring 3705 and the 2 GTOs were parked next to Joe's lake, the photo ops were fantastic!

    Since the 288 GTO was introduced in Europe in March, 1984, I would assume the Marchetti introduction would have been June, 1984. However, the dates I put on the boxes at some point have both "84?" and "85?". Would Joe have been able to acquire a 288 GTO by June, 1984? Announcing it in 1985 would seem a bit late.

    Any comments or info?

    The GTO 57701, new 17 July that came to Canada arrived in 1985. I think Joe's party was probably 1985. The American Jere Clark also received his GTO in the summer of 1985.

    C, I would think it would have been 1984. Even privateers, such as Ralph Lauren already had their cars by May 1984.

    Prancing Horse covered the June 10, 1984 spring 'picnic' at Monte Fiori - the Marchetti farm in Illinois. The big attraction that year was the 250 GTE with 5 cars present including Allan Boe's silver example. However the star of the day was the 375 America cabriolet that had not been seen for a decade.
    The black swans floated on the ponds and the band played on but there was no mention of a new limited production Ferrari GTO that day in 1984.

    It was not until 1985 that Prancing Horse covered any 288 GTO's at events. The FCA July national meet at Watkins Glen, New York that year saw at least one new GTO present. It was s/n 57220 owned by Jon Masterson. Mr Masterson also won best of Show with his 1972 312PB Ferrari. One GTO pictured carried the Italian export plate 'EE 095 AK' which may have been Mr Masterson's GTO or a different GTO.

    'All of the 180 GTO's will be delivered by August 1, 1985 prior to the factory closing for the month of August'. Italy's winter was colder, icier and wetter than normal which aided the Ferrari GTO test effort. They found a distributor cap problem, which resulted in a new cap design. The GTO also suffered some transmission problems but as of February 1985, that had been solved'.

    57220 is not a valid Ferrari serial number.
    Up until # 75000 all road going Ferraris carried an odd chassis number.
    I'm not with my database right now so cannot tell you what would be the correct number for Masterson's car.

    Jon Masterson's 288 GTO was chassis number 57229. He sold it to a European buyer for in excess of $1,000,000 in 1990, this told to me by the man himself.

    Thanks for correcting the typo error in the original story for the s/n of the Masterson 288 GTO. He also brought along his 1972 512 BB/LM 29507 to the FCA meet.
    Prancing Horse was one of the few old magazines along with Cavallino to list serial numbers back then even if a few typos crept in...

    F40 had the trans lock-up problem which needed to be fixed but this is the GTO section...

    So a GTO comment> in the close-up picture the seat material looks like leather? Doesn't seem to show the gradient change of color characteristic of cloth inserts on the seats.
