That happens all the time despite the outrage of a bunch of internet experts who have never spent a day in a Ferrari dealer. It is not excusing what happened here but to say driving a customer car hard is never acceptable is just stupid. Actually it is part of the job I never really liked. I was expected on occasion to put my driving record in jeopardy to fix a customer car.

We have had customers insist we do not drive the car and in those cases the keys get handed back and we thank them but explain it cannot be done but in reality most want and expect the car to be put to some nature of real test. Being smart about that is key. This wasn't.

I will disagree about the last part though. I think it was absolutely a joy ride. Read the last half of post 9.

I'm surprised that Miller MM never considered a contract with LIMEROCK park raceway to use the track for a customer/maintenance test bed. Considering the cost of service it might be better to truck the car to LRP and have a tech run it through is tests. Just a thought.

A dealer will not spend a dime in the service department that Ferrari does not force them to. It wasn't that long ago that many did not even have a roof over their heads. The money is not made in service and that is not where the money is spent.

In think your plan would end up worse. It takes away many of the barriers of getting carried away. And it is an expense no one wants to cover.

The system in place isn't bad. It just requires someone tighter on the reins.

If my mechanic didn't road test my car after doing work I'd consider the job half done.

Problem is in these speed retricted days there really is little place to road test properly.
Hard to explain a vibration at 120 without lots of space.

That all being said, motors on moderns dont need test drives, just the rigth computer hookup. Brakes maybe need testing, but not such high spedd, and then there is alignment.

Hey folks we ar ein the era of rplace parts untill its right.

There is a lot of truth to that

But let me tell a story about the very 1st F40 we received.

It cut out on high boost...badly

The weather when we received the car was dreary, wet and foggy. It had to be fixed and delivered. Ferrari in Italy had me taking it for high speed passes in 4 gear at high RPM and high boost. We did a bunch of them recording data and trying different things over the course of a couple of days and the weather didn't change. We had a pretty good road to do it on, a divided 4 lane road with very few cross streets and some big stretches between lights
but the roads were damp and visibility was down to about 2 or 300 ft. We charged up that road over and over for a couple of days. My ride along mechanic that was recording the data said something once about looking up and I said "Don't, you really don't want to see how stupid a thing we are doing". That's the kind of thing we were asked to do and it really wasn't all that uncommon.

Like I said, it isn't a part of the job I enjoy.

That part is not so hard. Modern cars I can get up to that speed easily between packs of traffic on the freeway. Wasn't always that way.

Note the way that dealership tech is sitting in front of the car, back against the Jersey Barrier, occupied with his phone, not watching his surroundings...the Enzo has rotated 180 degrees, pointed against traffic flow...so, if some distracted oncoming driver had even nudged the nose of the damaged Enzo, the tech would have been promptly squashed. I'm sure he was feeling pretty bad already, but it seems like whatever common sense he had got left at home that morning. Glad he didn't get hurt. Bummer for all concerned. John in CT.

I know the tech and I know Miller. There are no better people out there. We are very proud to be part of the Miller and Ferrari family.
I am sure that when this is all resolved everyone will be satisfied

I too find it surprising that Ferrari dealers make their money on car sales. Certainly there is profit there, but from what I can see from my local dealer, it is parts, service and accessories where the real money is made.

That is just my observation, I could be wrong.

    You are.

Selling exotic cars is very profitable. If the dealer contract did not require a service department they would not have one.

I did a search in this forum and I found this post. I can't post the link because it's in the Silver subscribed forum so you wouldn't see it. I can see Ferrari being different as it relates to new cars since all cars are sold at MSRP while just about every other make is discounted.

    The post-

"I don't know what it's like in the US, but back in Canada I have several friends in the new car dealership business. They all tell me they couldn't give a rat's backside about selling new cars. That is actually an annoyance to them, but one they have to deal with to fly their chosen dealership flag obviously.

They make the vast majority of their revenues in the service, parts and body shop departments. Used car division for some works out fairly well, others would rather scrap that too, but can't.

Perhaps it is different in the US (I doubt it?!?) or different with a marquee brand like Ferrari?"

They will replace it with another Enzo, or write him a check.

Still if the Utah car, flipped end over end over end, can be rebuilt to run on Bonneville, we will see this car again.
