Vanoni and Pagnibon had both raced in Alger 3 hours in 24/may/53, so that's likely where a deal was made. Pagnibon died two weeks later in Hyeres.
There seems to have been a third Ferrari in this Rallye: 0246 AL Franco Fassio Pagnibon is listed as driving a 340 MM in Nimes on the starting day of the Rallye: Nîmes [S+1.5] 1953 - Race Results - Racing Sports Cars
Hello, all race reports I have for the rallye Soleil Cannes mentioned only 2 Ferraris at the start with Pagnibon and Picard. Never heard of 0246 AL or saw a pic of this car at this event... And I also know the "conflicting" date of Nimes...There is also a pic in Maurice Louches Emotion Ferrari book. Don't have any period informations about this race or date. Maybe others can solve this "double date problem". best wishes, BjörnS
One thing I can’t explain is why 0236MM still had number 7 on the door at Rallye Soleil Cannes (see Maurice Louche’s book). Number 7 was Montlhéry on 12th april 1953...
Fassio and 0246 AL at Rallye Soleil Cannes 29 March 1953 is incorrect. The Factory Certificate of Origin for 0246 AL was issued 14 April 1953 and the sales date to original owner James Gerard Murray is 16 April 1953 and on the same day 0246 AL was actually road registered on Italian license plates of Modena. I have the paperwork for all this. Marcel Massini
0236 MM: Nimes 29 March 1953: The race number was 123. Rallye du Soleil-Cannes 29 March 1953 to 2 April 1953: The race number was 560. Coupe de Vitesse Montlhéry 12 April 1953: The race number was 7 (but the car still had the plaque from Soleil-Cannes with #560 on the rear below the fuel filler cap). In my calendar 2 April 1953 comes before 12 April 1953. Marcel Massini
OK, the pic I thought it was from Rallye Soleil Cannes was Montlhéry. Thanks Marcel. About the conflicting dates between Nîmes and Cannes, may be 29 March was just scrutineering and that Pagnibon received a derogation to join the race the day after ? Rallye Soleil Cannes had four events : 1 - race at Montlhéry, 2 - test of regularity on road during 1300 kms towards Cannes, 3 - after the arrival at Cannes, test of maneuverability, 4 - hillclimb between Cannes and Le Cannet. Pagnibon won the Rallye...
This opens other questions: did Fassio compete in the Rallye Soleil Cannes at all (albeit with another (brand of) car) or perhaps with 0246 AL at another rallye later in 1953?
Not the best preparation to start an exhaustive rallye. Even Fangio had a serious accident after a similar long night drive.
Again: Fassio is NOT connected at all with 0246 AL. It didn't belong to him nor is there any evidence that he ever drove it. 0246 AL was sold new to James Gerard Murray, an American from Pittsburgh/PA, who also purchased new 0403 GT. Marcel Massini
Image Unavailable, Please Login A pic of 0236MM at Nîmes posted by our late friend Boudewijn on his Facebook page...
Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login 4 April 1953 : opening of the International Motor Sports Show at New York. 0260MM on the Chinetti stand. This car had an impressive racing career in USA with Phil Hill... Bigger pics in Cavallino magazine #68.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Sure but this thread is for Sport cars. Anyway, here is the 212 Inter Vignale coupe in front of 0260MM. (Pic from our friend Boudewijn). NEVER seen a sole pic of 0248AL at 1953 New York show !
Hard to know where to look as there were at least three different events arranged in Madison Square Garden, Grand Central Palace and Waldorf-Astoria. Could also be just a factory remark to polish the car little better as Chinetti eventually had plans to put it on display, I don't know.
Thanks Kare. From pics I posted, I would say 0248AL was not on the Chinetti stand at the International Motor Sports Show.
To confuse matters, the German edition of Ferrari World magazine listed 0248 AL as present on a New York autosalon in 1954
FYI 0311 EU remained in Europe from 10 March 1954 until at least February 1964 (sixty four). I have the documents. Marcel Massini
