Transmission oil on my 3.2 has not been changed for some years (only do low mileage each year), on draining the transmission for an oil change, I got out nearly 6 litres !!

Oil seemed quite thin, and I think it has been contaminated by engine oil, is this feasible ? through the gear selector rod which passes through the sump ?

Yes -- do a search on "shift shaft seal".

Depends what kind of oil it is. Mineral or synthetic.. synthetic is generally more thin then mineral. Most put in synthetic because of the "gear 2 issue" when driving away cold. As this oil is more thin it can easily escape out of the bore where the 2nd gear shift goes in when having a cold transmission

If it is contaminated with engine oil the transmission oil should be dark brown to black and not being transparent anymore. Then it would indeed be your shift shaft seals. If it is nice and clean then it is not contaminated.

You will notice if your shift shaft seal is on the end of its life. Usually a wet area around the shift shaft going into your "oil sump". (yes it goes through your oil sump before it goes into your transmission) :)

There are 2, one near the shift stick and one near the oil sump.

Is it #5 on this mechanical pic (there are two)

It is doable yourself, but for the one near your Gearbox lever you would need to take away your console. When you do this as you take out the smaller shaft that goes into the oil sump you need to replace the shift shaft seals! (They always leak after some years so it is convenient when you are there anyway.) Most people replace these and when you are there anyway they replace the silent blocks as well.)

There is a very nice post here:

However the last two pics I would not advise since it can damage your sealings. The sealings are very easily to peal out and, when you fold them, brought back in. Be aware you do not touch the aluminum bore case with a screwdriver that holds the the seals. If damaged it cannot seal up properly anymore and you will have continuesly leakage.

For a 3.2 you do not have to use the dip stick hose trick. you can unscrew the 2 bolts and take it out by hand.
