Front suspension 328

Almost done. Waiting on tie rod ends. I had to cut three bushing bolts that were stuck, one right upper and two on the left upper a-arm. The shock bushing’s outer rings were stuck and had to be cut so the 20 ton press would push them out. The Diablo cutting blade worked best on the bolts the dremel cut off wheel for the shocks. The shocks are adjustable and I had thought the front was stiff. When I checked the setting it was at four half turns, five half turns is max. I reset the shocks to two half turns, mid range. While it was apart I checked the wheel bearings and glad I did. The wheels turned easily and smooth but when I looked there was no grease on the bearings. The grease had heated and harden forming a crust. The right side was black were the left side was dark brown. I cleaned it up and packed the bearings plus filled the cup. Next is the rear suspension. I want to thank everyone who has made a how to write up. They are being used.

Lonnie, sounds like a fair bit of work! Regarding the bearings, if the grease went dry and hardened up then it's likely the bearings are shot and should be replaced. I believe on the 308 the bearings are a standard bearing size available at NAPA (BR2 or BR6 or something like that). Not sure about the 328 however. If you have a press already then it shouldn't be too much more trouble to replace. Just a friendly suggestion.

 

Cliff, the front bearings are quite a bit different between the 308 and 328. See the figures below. This first diagram is for the 308 (85' QV) which requires an inner and outer bearing (#'s 11 & 12) which each run about $40. The second diagram is for the 328 (86') and it has just one bearing (#6) and costs alot more (approx $650).

Alledgedly the same as used in a Citroen CX I believe ;-)

(its been discussed hereabouts before I think)

 

are the suspension arms and the pick up points the same between the 308 and 328?

from the diagram it just looks like the upright and hubs are different...

 

If you go to www.ferrariparts.co.uk & pick up the right TAVs you will see there are two versions of the 328 suspension arms.

Earler version upto car 76625, later version from 76626

For the earlier model:

Thanks Ettore! Good catch there. Very glad I have a 308..... I happen to have some of those very bearings sitting in my parts cabinet left over from something else (911 I believe). I'd hate to have to buy the 328 bearings! At $650/set I'd probably be re-packing them as well, and hoping they hang in there for some more miles...

anybody have the number off of the 328 bearing itself? SKF # perhaps? If so i can cross ref and do a fitment search on it. I thought Lambo Jalpa bearings were expensive!

 

The balls felt tight in the socket's and should be OK but I am concerned about the right side the grease was black.

 

Sorry, I meant to come back and update my follow up post, just had to dig through my notes. The $650/ea figure is what Ferrari charges. A year and a half ago I replaced my front bearings in conjunction with a suspension/brake redo (see the following link for details: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261685) Not wanting to pay $1300 for a set of bearings I tracked down the part numbers and here's what I found: The 328 front wheel bearing SKF part # is 441696M. SNR makes an equivalent bearing that works as well, part #T6B10894S03 (this is the one that is used in the Citroen CX). I sourced both bearings from an outfit in California called "locateballbearings.com" and at the time (October 2009) they had the SKF bearings for $300/ea and the SNR bearings for $190. Hope this helps.

 

It's not so much the balls feeling tight - it's more a matter of the surface of the race and bearings. Running without grease will produce a surface which is not smooth - looks like somebody went at it hard with a micro-hammer when you look at it with magnification. This is what you hear when bearings are about to let go...noise caused by a rough surface. Can be tough to see with the naked eye. Also look for blueing....this is a sign of heat and is similarly a reason to replace.
