Kids generally don't keep their text books, they return them at the end of use. A single text book can be used for years. For as long as the material is still relevant in most cases. They only buy new ones when one is beyond further use. New tech gadget every student every year is beyond most public schools systems budgets. Then you also have the problem of kids who can't afford them, if parents pay for them. They could probably buy 5 textbooks to 1 iPad. Its a bad plan.

What happens when the electricity goes out? Really stupid to not have redundancies that are not based on electricity of any type. Knowledge and skills are lost everyday to the digital age and create vulnerabilities in our 'instant' push button world.
Society is too dependent on the kilowatt already and if or when the grid goes out it's back to a prehistoric existence and anarchy... survival of the fittest, it won't be pretty. Electrical dependence is a ticking time bomb and can be used as a weapon.

Not to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL on this thread, but is there any hard data on the benefits of using laptops or tablets exclusively? I'm thinking SAT or ACT improvements and things that can be compared apples to apples, pardon the pun.

Maybe no one has written an app to do that yet.

The data shows that they hinder learning. Plenty of studies out there. Nothing beats pen and paper for letting things really sink into young brains. Electronics are just gimmicks in education. Once the material has been mastered, electronics help us save time and effort. But for imparting lessons and concepts, we are about 20% there.

Met with two that will start the ball rolling. Identify the need. Is there any? If so, where to start. My funding requirement, public school. No private school. One class. Not an entire school or system wide effort.

Singapore has a rigorous syllabus and lots of paper-based reading and writing. Singapore also uses caning to beat dumb ideas out of people.

    Things work smoothly over there.

A local high school teacher, in support of the officer that got canned for dragging a student out of her chair. Says all the students use cell phones all day in class. Unreal

Kids learn how to use the internet on their own. Kids learn more doing things with pen and paper. A device like an ipad is like a calculator to teach math. The kids don't gain basic math skills using a calculator and that's why they are not used in elementary schools. Most kids have access to computers or at least a lap top, teachers now have kids email in their book reports. So its all ready near paper less. We teach basic math because it is used in everyday life. We need to do simple math almost everyday. The way its taught, through retention, makes it fast for people to get the answer. Calculators for the vast majority, they loose the retention. They do book reports for the same reason. You can't type out a book report on an iPad. The core of education is not to teach getting smarter, its social skills. You can't teach that with an iPad.
