I would guess that his survival had to do with this car NOT having shoulder harness allowing his upper torso to fold down into the cockpit. While I am not certain what equipment this car had, I see many cars in vintage racing with modern 4/5/and 6 point safety harness yet no roll bar, keeping the driver bolt upright in the seat and keeping the drivers head to act as the rollbar. There are times when lack of current safety equipment is as important as having it.

All of these cars are VERY fragile. You really don't want to have a shunt in any of them. He was very lucky.

My view was from directly across the track where the car ended up. Mass' body was half in half out of the car, the hump on the bodywork behind the cockpit left just about enough space for him to fit between the car and the ground without being crushed. The back of his overalls were covered in grass stains.

Exactly right. Wearing seat belts is merely one part of a twin package which should ALWAYS include roll-over protection. If a driver chooses to run without belts he could still benefit from roll-over protection. But if a driver chooses to wear belts WITHOUT roll-over protection he really is playing Russian Roulette with more than one chamber loaded. I have seen several drivers emerge relatively unscathed when unbelted in cars without roll-over protection. I have also seen a driver really severely injured because by wearing belts in a car without decent roll-over protection his head, neck and upper body were crushed in a roll-over. The ratio in my own experience over 40-odd years is in the order of 10 to 1...

I appreciate what you mean but not really true in this case. The D50A chassis and body structure is really very strong and in simple terms very protective...in fact the primitive opposite of fragile. They tend to survive little damaged while the same cannot always be said of the fragile little pink organism rattling around inside them...

I'm sure you're right in the case of the D50A. I was comparing in my mind my 412P to a modern Audi LMP 1.

    Cheers

Always good advice. In any car, of any year.

Sorry for the quick tangent. The image of the Dino reminded me of the article I saw in Octane magazine recently. Congrats to you and Hrabi on the write-up and the great photos.

    Back to the event topic....

Paul and Tom, thanks for the pictures. This was one of the best Revivals ever....it was great seeing the 330LMB finally beat all those hot-rod E-Types!
