I have the air box out and it has some flaking, rust, et cetera. So, while it's out... While I spend the day scouring the forum with the "help" of the search function, maybe someone has the answer to what is the correct paint to use/correct process to refinish the air box? Also, there is, what seems to be, a gasket that was either on the cover or mounted portion of the air box or both (can't tell as it is cracked and spread over both parts right now). Anyone know what to replace this with and where it belongs? Cheers! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
There's this post --> http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137543124&postcount=11 But, who knows if that is "correct".
And then, there is this --> http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171697&highlight=airbox+paint But, no photos. I suppose my only remaining questions are: A photo of a "correct" air box finish and how to replace that gasket-y thing? Thanks!
Wrinkle black paint is the common agreement. See this thread: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105874 for some great work on a red GT4. Somewhere amidst the over 100 posts, the fellow posts a scan from an old R&T that shows the engine compartment. This thread is a must read for anyone restoring their GT4 - if not for facts, for the pure enthusiasm and skill the writer demonstrates in his car work. the FiatRN
I went thru this thread first. I remember seeing it early in my GT4 research. The painted box is on page 4. No reference to what the process was. Thank you for your response.
The gasket at the airbox is PN 104548. Given the condition of mine, it was difficult to determine the origins of its position, materials, et cetera. Also, sending the airbox out to SpringCo (http://www.springco-coatings.com/index.html) to get a wrinkle powder coating. Never ends...
Got the airbox back from SpringCo and I could not be more happy. Looks great and they also straightened out any imperfections/inconsistencies that existed. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ha! It truly NEVER ends. I'm going on 11 years with my car and I'm still dealing with "issues" Nice job with the air-box resto. Looks sweet.
Airbox is refinished. New gasket is in. Anyone know what side the gasket gets affixed to? The cover or the mounted portion? Also, what should I use to glue it on the appropriate side? Thanks!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Dr., I just pulled my cover off again, and I swear for the life of me, there is an equal deposit of old rubber on each surface. It is impossible to tell which surface is primary. You could PM or email Rob Garvin. He would know if anybody here does!
I suffered from the same thing. I will contact RG. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone (which probably means I'm sitting at my car confused)
Buonapart, May I ask approximately what the wrinkle powder coating cost from the company you mentioned? Did you strip it full first or was that included in the cost? Naturally, yours looks so good I'm thinking about getting mine done....
For attaching use weatherstrip adhesive which is really just a weather proof contact cement. I don't know what the factory did but from a design perspective, I would attach it to the cover. Its unlikely they attached it to the lip as its just harder to do it right and if you attach it to the cover its protected when sitting on a shelf. Almost any factory I have ever worked with tries to make sure they minimize damage in shipping and storage to reduce costs. Ferrari is no different. I can almost guarantee they didn't put the gasket on at installation of the cover.
Although the pics in my first post have gasket residue on both top and bottom, the lid has the most which would lead me to believe that's where it needs to be mounted. Thanks Sent from my iPhone (which probably means I'm sitting at my car confused)
Springco blasted it, straightened out any imperfections, and coated it. I don't know the cost of just the airbox as I sent out a few pieces to get refinished. I put an email out to my contact there to get a price. Sent from my iPhone (which probably means I'm sitting at my car confused)
