Hello and thanks in advance- I am stuck on this project and need some advice on my 1990 TR’s water pump seal.

My problem in part is because my original seal came out in pieces and I don’t have a good reference to compare with.

My first purchase to replace the seal was the newer style single piece unit for the original spacer - it was super tight around the spacer and ultimately damaged it by scratching it badly when I had to remove it. It was still leaking so it had to come out.

So my second purchase was a new spacer of the original size- and the original style two piece seal. I want to make sure these are the correct units because they are different than I expected. The original seal has a bigger hole in the center than the one piece seal. This one is quite loose, that is the spacer is a very loose fit in the new one where it was extremely tight on the one piece seal. Question 1 - is that correct? Should it be a loose fit? Second question- the new spacer has a bevel where it meets the seal- is there any issue with this? Last question - is there anything I should do to prep the ceramic disk that rubs against the back of the prop?

Here are some pictures, and thanks again! Bill

I have not used the 2 piece seals since the TR was still in production. I never considered them a good seal. Since its been so long my information may not be 100%. The disc that goes in the impeller does not look correct. The rubber should have a square edge and some small ribs around the circumference. One of the very last 2 piece seals I used looked like that and due to the rounded edge of the rubber it simply slipped out of place under pressure causing a catastrophic coolant leak.

With the correct size (there are several) one piece seal just press the sleeve into the seal prior to seal installation. Also many TR impellers have too small diameter recess for the one piece seal. It is a very easy operation to open it up with a cylindrical metal bit in a die grinder. The oil seal behind the water seal requires replacement too.
