If I haven’t started my Dino in a bit I spray some starter fluid down the driver’s side intake after letting the fuel pump slow down. No choke needed here in SoCal. Starts right up and goes immediately to idle and starts up immediately every time after that. I do this to save the starter, pumping etc. As I said, I only do this when my Dino has been sitting. I have a gear reduction starter that gives a lot of energy to starting. I have the Winterburn CD Ignition.

Mine always required feathering after ignition.

Thanks. Assume you all use some type of simple battery tender - going to get a simple one today.

I've added a Luminition ignition to the distributor, Bosch electronics and gear reduction starter. No matter how long it's been sitting, I let the fuel pump fill the system, give the peddle 3 or 4 pumps and it fires right away. I don't use the choke, but have to keep the revs up for a bit - then it idles just fine...

My Ctek blew up a battery in my car, they would not reply to my complaints. Fortunately the car did no catch fire, but spilled acid all over.
That, was a lot of fun to clean.

You could offer me all your Cteks and I would not take 1 if you paid me to use it.

    Regards, Alberto

Which model Ctek? I have (4) in use and never an issue. Also note that modern Ferrari factory supplied chargers are Cteks with the Ferrari name on it.

Can you show where you spray the fluid ?
I also have the Winterburn Ignition. Mine starts fine but I like the idea of not having to run the starter so much when the car has been sitting for a month or so.

I literally spray it directly into the driver’s side intake as that side is used by the air box.

Yup almost every manufacturer uses ctek chargers with branding. McLaren Lambo Ferrari etc...

We have a whole building full of cars on cteks. They are one of the only chargers I trust over night.

I dont trust any 24/7 charger, Ctek or any other make.

I have two Cteks and when one showed a floating charge and basically screwed up the battery I didnt trust them after that.

any good battery should last 3 months at least without being used. I connect the Ctek once every 3 months and top up the battery, then disconnect. A simple sign on the windscreen over winter to remind me in 3 months time is good enough.

    Hmmm ...

    a) Mine just starts, every time. It's always been that way.
    b) I have a luminition installed, a simple and excellent option that I recommend.
    c) My 1972 Euro 246 has an automatic choke based on an eccentric metallic device that closes as the engine heats. Set it once, and good to go. I assumed all Dinos had this.

    Hmmm.

    a) Same here.
    b) Winterburn ignition and it works perfectly.
    c) Not on any euro 246 as far as I am aware, I thought only 3x8's had that system?

To the original poster: If your choke is working (best to double check that it has not been disabled in some non-obvious way), and you are giving the carb-bowls enough time to pre-fill, you should not be having a hard time starting the car. If you are in some really cold situation (like freezing-or-below) it might still take a few attempts, but otherwise, a working choke ought to be enough to get a properly working car to start easily.

Note that if you are in a place where the temp is (say) below 50-degrees-F, some pumping and retries are expected if you don't use the choke.

How sure are you that the carb internals are clean/open, you have strong spark, etc? As others have basically said, you should check "spark" and "fuel" (as "air" tends to be more of a given)...

Buy yourself a gear reduction starter. Its the best thing we have installed in our Dino in 38 years of ownership...its magic, and fully reversible. We have a huge variation in temperatures here in NZ. It was always hard to start when hot. Not anymore.
