I recently returned from Cairo (last week), where I was teaching a class on computational fluid dynamics for river modeling at the National Water Science Center. The students were professors from around Egypt and government researchers and engineers. I had lots of opportunities to talk with them and also with people on the street and at our hotel about what was going on. I am not putting myself forward as any kind of expert, but my impression matches what Tarek is saying. The protestors came from all kinds of backgrounds, I had no sense that they were extremists at all. They were all polite and well spoken about the issues. The most common theme I heard from protestors is that they felt that their children had no opportunity under the current corrupt regime and they were putting themselves on the front line to change things for their children. It was a powerful, powerful message that anyone could understand and identify with. I left with nothing but the strongest admiration for the Egyptian people and for what this revolt is all about.

It's true........religion plays no role in this revolution, the people are united.

Unfortunately strong and large protests will continue in Egypt tomorrow. Just minutes ago Mubarak held a speech in which he confirmed that he will remain President until next September when new Presidential elections will take place.........the Egyptians will not accept. We have reached a deadlock, a very dangerous situation.

I hope the driver is identified and brought to justice for that - it's inexcusable.

    Sincerely,
    Andrew.

This must have happened more than once because I saw a video a few days ago of a gray van that ran over some people on the street.

Pictures of the van after it hit a lamp post the same night of the accident. It was shot at when it was trying to escape. The strange part is that we have no news about the driver or what happened to him after the van was stopped. Rumors say he was able to escape to the US embassy which was only a few hundred meters away.

Today is a very important today. At noon today, hundreds of thousands of protestors will march towards Mubarak's presidential palace. It will be a direct confrontation with the army and the presidential guards.......a very dangerous situation. The head of the Egyptian military yesterday officially announced (in the absence of Mubarak) that "the army will not fire a single bullet against the protestors". IMO, the military and Mubarak are not in agreement at the moment. I expect that the military will side with the Egyptians and force Mubarak to leave.

Mubarak's speech yesterday was a disapointment to all Egyptians. We expected him to resign, but instead he confirmed that he will continue to rule till next September. A very poor decision. He is now one man against us all........he will be forced to leave.

    deadlock it is.....
mubarak has left no option but for the army to see him out.....

suleiman has burned himself with the old regime.

hopefully there will not be a standoff between the army and the presidential guard.

perosnally, i feel that every single egyptian even among army or presidential guard ranks want mubarak out. and they will not grant him a graceful step-down.

watching his speech i almost felt he is talking to another country.....

he is sacrificing a whole nation for his own will.....criminal.

I heard on the radio that handing over control to the military is against the Egyptian constitution. Is this true?
