Hi all, Now that the year has gone by and I need to change my engine oil again; I am at a loss what to use. I used Redline 5W-40, but it has foamed bad more days than not since I put it in last year in October. Just checked my oil again, and sure enough it is foaming...bubbles on the oil stick. Only did 700 miles on it. I am not sure what to use next, now that the factory Shell is no longer for sale... Many thanks
I thought about it more and looked at oil viscosities... I would like to stick to a 5w 40 as these engines get hot on track.. Planning a track day in October and plenty next year.
‘When I bought my last case it was still marked as the Platinum Euro. Either is fine as they are the same.
A Ferrari mechanic! Not that you can not do it yourself but a good mechanic can help spot other items that may need attention.
Motul sport. A true group V base unlike most group 3 synthetic oils. A little more pricey but if you want a good oil this or redline or group V ester based. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had a foaming issue with Pennzoil Euro 5W-40. At last servicing I changed to Valvoline Euro. 5W-40. Has all the same specs as the Pennzoil, Mobil 1, etc. etc. Absolutely no foaming and it took exactly 2 jugs and the level is perfectly in the middle of the dipstick. I'm sticking with the Valvoline for now unless something else develops. To most people oil is a religion of some sort so you will get as many different answers. It has remained clearer and cleaner than the Pennzoil for almost 2K miles now. just my .02. This oil is avail at some Walmart Supercenters for a pretty good price. You can check online which stores have it is stock. Image Unavailable, Please Login as there are users.
Exactly! I also got that and returned it after reading the ferrari technical bulletin posted above...the pennzoil racing is not sold anywhere...

in the usa, platinum euro was the recommended for a while, even had the logo on their bottles, but then they dropped it in '19-'20 time frame. I just bought redline, its popular in the 355 forums since its does not foam.... but then the op is saying he has isssues with that... oh well
From the Pennzoil site, and per above. Been using this for the past three years with no issues. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My independent gets Shell (Ferrari OEM oil) from Europe in 55-gallon barrels. So, still available in bulk.
The lower number of the viscosity has no effect on the properties of the oil when hot. If it is getting hot enough to make a difference Ferrari suggested 10-60.
... the other problem with Mobil 1 0w-40... I used it in all my cars for many years. It seems that quality has slipped through the cracks, BMW no longer approves it and I stopped using since ( I used to be a mostly BMW shop until I got my GT350R and now Ferrari) .. I have seen bad (i.e. high metal wear) Blackstone reports from the new formula of Mobil 1 shown to me by an older racer (believe it or not, he was older than me) at the track about a year ago. He switched to Liqui Moly and was much happier apparently. I will stick to my decision not to use it anymore, but each to it's own... Just an FYI, here is the sticker from my car regarding oil specifications; the CCMC is an older , outdated spec now morphed into ACEA. G5 is more of a ACEA A3 or something like that (read up at bobistheoilguy) . All modern oils mentioned on this thread meet API SL/CF specs, and the ACEA one, so it's more of a user preference in fact Image Unavailable, Please Login
