Yeah, the speed slats. Those add about 5 mph to the top end, from what I heard somewhere.

More seriously, cars can lose compression and power over time, which probably explains some of the difference. Even if the original specs were optimistic, you'd have to get significantly more than 128 mph out of a 300 bhp car.

My old 1998 Merc SLK230, with the top down, did 125 mph (closed road, etc.) and was still crawling up when I decided I wasn't interested in seeing if it could do the full 140 mph with the top down and me sans helmet. And that was a four-banger with an ordinary automatic gearbox, approx 185 bhp.

    "stuck to the ground"

Very loud, very very loud... but no wiggle, wobble or twitchy feeling. The only worry was running out of runway onto the safety zone (or whatever they call it at airports).

My 240sx is governor limited to 119mph and it has hit it more than once and it only has 126whp and 142 lb ft of torque at the wheels. factory claims were 155bhp 156lb ft of torque at the crank, the frontal drag coeff on my car is 0.33. car weighs a bit over 2750lbs.

from what I know about the base specs of the 348 is claimed 300bhp might have lost a pony here and there over the years like mine. (Im guesstimating mine to be making 145-150bhp and 165lb ft of torque at the crank). The 348 weighs in at around 3050lbs or close. dont know the drag coeff. So it really shouldnt have that much trouble with 128mph.

I mean 155mph is doable with 250hp so whats so impossible about it happening with the 300hp?

Im guessing the black 348 is yours.

Im also guessing since you have different rims and tires on it, that it might be a different diameter in this case a smaller diameter tire.

One thing I would like to know if anyone can tell me, is the 355 and 348 final drive interchangable?

If so I would recommend that for some snappier acceleration, but your top speed would suffer a bit. The way your car is geared, if everything is running the way it should it would top out at 155mph @ 7500rpm. 165mph @ 8000rpm

Good observation. I have 18" factory Speedline Challenge wheels on the car, instead of the stock "Jeep Cherokee" 17" ones. My transmission is not 1990... it is actually a 1994 Spider one, with the modified final gear ratio.

Wait so you have the 4.35 final drive already?

Your overall tire diameter is 26.1 inches for the stockers

What size of tires do you have on the speedlines?

Then other than dyno and compression tests Im outta ideas why its struggling to hit 128

I think wise3 hit the nail on the head much earlier in this thread -- 6000 ft just isn't enough to get anywhere near top speed.

Man, to think the 1990-1995 era Infiniti Q45 can hit 180 with a simple reflash. The attached picture was on a closed runway, GPS shot.

I had my 1994 Q45touring up to 145 indicated, the giant mother with still pulling like a freight train. This was on a 4 lane highway that was completed and lined, just 1 day before it opened to traffic, so I was being relatively responsible yet illegal.

Daniel, on your run, was there any wind, any uphill, and what was the altitude, temperature and humidity?

The Granville Queen, B&B in Edenton North Carolina. It was our home base for the weekend. Thanks to Woody (599GTB), we enjoyed a few 'beverages' late into the evening on that wide southern porch.

    Two words...."Texas Mile"

Standing start....they trap your speed at one mile marker, but the WW2 runway is another four miles long..

It was a Naval Air Station outside of Goliad, you can see it clearly on Google Earth.

I did 134.397 in a bone stock 308GTB, tools and spare on board, Shell Premium pump gas..they had Racing Fuel for sale but I was afraid to burn it.......

A missed shift would have scattered the engine I'm sure....

I think thats 180km/h, but 145mph is entirely possible with the q. Dont underestimate the motor thats in the q45, put one side by side with a imsa 300zx v8 or the r390 gt1 lemans v8 you will end up seeing that its effectively the same engine. Give me a few years I can show this world what that motor is capable of putting out.

Then there must be something wrong with your 348! ;);)

I take my Ferrari over 100 mph nearly EVERY time I take it for a drive and I feel in total control everytime. :):)

The car never feels unstable or unsafe and I drive on very average roads here in Mount Isa. :):)

Oh no, that is certainly 180MPH.

Those motors are effing beasts. Pain in the ass to work on though.

What are you planning on building?

Remember the company Nizpro in Australia builds 1,200+HP boat racing motors with the VH series as a base motor.

Without giving anything away, can either the NC or Detroit participants tell me how they secured the airport for these runs? We have been trying to 'persuade' the owner of the local regional airport next door to provide us with use of the runway for a few hours, and he cites FAA regs as the impasse...which I think is nonsense.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thanks!

    Bob
