Can someone please outline what is involved when importing a car to the UK from outside the EU, for example from Japan or the middle east. Any information on costs and modifications that need to be done would be appreciated.
    thanks

    The website is actually www.hmce.gov.uk
But you wouldn't really be expected to know that Dave, as you are a trillionaire tax exile in IoM!:D

You will have to pay 10% Import duty, then 17.5% VAT. Probably insurance as well around 1.5% and shipping about £500.

I was looking at buying a car that was £18,500 in Bahrain, and once landed would cost around £25,000.

Once landed here you will need to have some work completed for the MOT. Depending on the age of the car, it may be just headlights (LHD-RHD), but it could well be more.

Once it has passed an MOT, you need to sort out insurance. Given the fact that the car is not UK registered, it may take a little phoning around.

With an MOT and a cover note in your sweaty mitts, you will need to go to the DVLA to apply for a registration no and car tax.

    Hope this helps.....

    Thanks for the replies
yes it is a help, the car is in Saudi and is a 1995 Diablo VT, priced in $US, just an option worth considering as the Euro is quite strong against the dollar, still finding out details about the car but duty along with vat will probably mean its not a worthwhile proposition.
    thanks guys
    steve
