They had by far the best writers of that era...Davis, Weith, Shepherd, Yates, Norbye, Fox, etc., etc.

    Bob, who wrote this? I don’t see a by-line.

I agree Jack, more Esquire than Motor Trend. Car and Driver and Road & Track in the 1960s were both terrific.

R&T was good, but a bit dry. C and D was a gang of ass kickers. I forgot to mention Bruce McCall, rivaled for zaniness only by R&T’s Stan Mott. Both could have written for MAD.:D

+1 and both illustrated their own articles, though I may be remembering Bruce McCall from the National Lampoon. At certain times in the 1960s it seemed that Henry Manney wrote most of the magazine for R&T. Road & Track had better coverage of the European scene and road racing(F1 and the classic endurance races). I tended to value their road test data more than Car and Driver(notorious for abusing test cars).

Right. C and D had very little racing coverage. R&T started to take itself a little less seriously when Sam Posey started doing the April fool road tests. I met Stan Mott a few years ago at Amelia. He drove the Cyclops down the awards runway!

Thanks for all the interesting comebacks regarding the article.
Jack - Back in the late 70s, I got to know Bock Yates pretty well.
We met when he saw my GTC at a car show and he mentioned the article but I never followed up on it.
I don't remember him mentioning the author.
We spent a bit of time on the phone and he turned out to be a most interesting fellow.
As I recall, he lived somewhere around Batavia, NY and died in the fall of 2016.
