You don’t employ university graduates do you ? Talk to anyone who does. Talk to the staff at private ‘colleges’ and ask the what happens if they try to fail a paying student (especially a foreign one). Education is now one of the biggest scams in Australia (from many sides).

True. My wife did an MBA at Bond - hardly a fly-by-night college. A lot of the assessment was in assignments, and they always saddled a group of native English speakers with a foreign student or two with very little English to give them a helping hand.

I'm 100% in agreement with you Karen (one of us must be hallucinating!) having just lived this with my sons, one at RMIT and the other at USYD.

To get around the sub-standard english communication skills of international students, assignment teams are set up with at least one native english speaker to 3 or 4 non-natives. That translates to the native speaker having to do a disproportionate share of the work.

Whist both sons had many good friendships and experiences with foreign students, the reality is that they often suffered from the extreme workload they inherited. I suggest that quite a few foreign students walk away with degrees they didn't wholly earn. In the long run, the reputations of our universities and their graduates are diminished by this.

I lecture and this is certainly NOT the case at my university.

International students fail if they don't achieve the required results. All written and oral assessments are graded against a Rubric so there is no opportunity to 'add' marks - unless you want to lose your job. Contract cheating and plagiarism are addressed with harsh penalties.

Would be personally embarrassed if any of our students entered the workforce without the required levels of skill...or English.

That might be for the end points, but what Ian and I are saying still holds true - ESL students are carried.
