THIS: after the mass murder in New Zealand, their prime minister banned the use of the perpetrator’s name, and Aus mostly follows that protocol. Taking away their 5mins of instagram glory would be a small help, if not a whole solution.

Okay, put down the vegemite sandwich and climb off your kangaroo and tell me how you would identify a “mentally unstable” person accurately enough to deny him his right to a firearm. Are you going to be doing psychological assessments? Someone else going to be doing those? Can someone’s mental state change over time? And you did see the part about 80% of gun violence is from illegally obtained guns, right...you read that, but ignored it right?

Wow Quigley, you can google. Writing a list is 100% about emotion and not statistics. Certainly if you are smart enough to afford a Ferrari you are smart enough to provide some real cogent thought to a complex discussion, right, assuredly, right?

This is all getting a bit out of hand, isn't it. Let's break it down a bit. Firstly do you think that the USA has a gun problem? I'm not saying I (or anybody) can fix it, I'm not disparaging your country or your culture, just asking, do you think there's a problem?

 

No.

It is not a “gun” problem. A gun is a tool that empowers one whacko more “impact” for his sick thoughts than other means might, except for a bomb, or a car driving through a crowd, to name just two off the top of my head. It is concealable and convenient.

What we have in the US are a series of very significant societal issues of young rage, mental health problems, drugs, and a whole host of peripheral problems attached to those such as gangs and criminal behavior.

I posted a series of statistics, a few posts back, so how about you look at those and actually give them some thought and then come back here with some useful insights other than “Americans are idiots out of control, sick bastards, etc.!!”

So, yes a school shooting grabs worldwide attention..answer me this...and answer HONESTLY here and now...what did you think about a black guy mowing down white children at a Christmas parade in his SUV, many dead, 62 injured, perhaps maimed for life, did you make a post about it...be honest...did you? Did it “sicken” you? How about the same in France, and London....did you post about those too? If not, why not?

Does @4_Eff_Sake list sicken you? Do you know it’s validity? Do you know over how many years (decades) those events occurred? Do you know it is “schools ‘affected’ by guns?” You know all that right? Harvard is on that list, and I went to Harvard. The only thing people walking around Harvard Yard are concerned about is someone using their correct pronouns, not guns. But you all know that, right?

 

OK then

 

I really don't understand why us Aussies are internet interacting with most of these clowns on the other side of the Pacific.

As soon as 'they' start comparing all other forms of killing machines to a firearm they know they've admitted 'they' have a serious problem with firearms.

Almost every other type of 'weapon' mentioned here was NOT designed specifically to kill something.

The only other type of weapon I can think of otherwise is a spear....I'm happy to be contradicted here.

The gun restriction and consequence fall out of restriction of gun ownership on Australia has lead to some very sad outcomes for the land owner and environment.
As I have stated on this forum before I very much enjoyed my shooting trips. But when they introduced the "new" gun laws after Bryant,the restrictions that fell on pistols and automatic weapons were portrayed as though you could buy them on any street corner.
For a start in this country before port Arthur you could NOT buy automatic weapons, period, and to go and try and get a pistol license was a mission and a half. A good center fire rifle and a shotgun was all you needed.
At first all you had to do was register, and you would get a license, then you had to renew and then the price went up, and up and up, plus other restrictions were implemented until it was no longer viable to go and have the odd shot. So i sold my guns- they got what they wanted.
Also, now we have a situation that no longer do you have the guys that go out camping and fishing and hunting and freely distribute some lead aspirin to 10 or 20 bunnies, some pigs feral cats, and foxes etc. A complete volunteer army keeping all these environmental disasters under some sort of control for no cost to the public purse stopped in its tracks. Look up the stats on how many native animals are killed by cats a year in OZ you may be shocked, some of them will be extinct very soon because of somebodies freed Moggy. You don't see Greta Thumbtack waving a flag about that.
I can tell you first hand what its like when you see king parrots and other small marsupials being eaten alive by feral cats, 1 hour old lambs being eaten alive from the arse by three or four foxes, wild pigs destroying large areas of crops, 4500 acres of wheat which was one paddock of wheat out of 22,000, heaving with roos, as far as the eye could see is hopping!
So there has to be a balance, and all of us are not villain's.
But the situation and mentality in the US is so much different, how they fix the ideals and fixation they have on guns i have no idea, but a start needs to be made NOW, before any more children die. Who wants to send their child to a school with armed patrols around the school?

I have never been on the case of farmers re gun ownership,it's as much a tool as their ute.

One of the issues we up here,and probably elsewhere,is just what you've brought up re folk being allowed onto farmer Jim's property to do some culling.

Up here though we've seen an end to THAT by drongo's being allowed on to shoot only to have the stock shot instead.

There were about 3 different stations in the Gulf we were allowed onto for fishing and now they're locked up due to these dickheads......a case of irresponsible Aussie gun ownership

Where is the outrage over Saudi Arabia's death penalty for gay people?
Where is the outrage over one million Uighur people imprisoned in China?
Where is the outrage over female genital mutilation in Africa? (200 million girls and women and counting)
15,000 children die of disease and malnutrition every day (look it up). Why are their lives less valuable?

Our media largely ignores bad things that happen in muslim or communist countries, but they love to find fault with the USA. Those same journalists however are the first to suck up to any visiting American celebrity or brag about their invitation to the Oscars, Emmy's or other vacuous events.

I guess it’s hard to change the mind of a patriot and it’s your constitutional right to own and carry a firearm if the laws of the state deems it legal to do so, your right on all counts more than likely, you seem to have a great deal of knowledge on the subject and it’s highly unlikely the laws will change regardless of how many people are taken by these awful and cowardly acts, I can only sympathise with you guys and resign myself to the fact that you as a society will never learn, you are far too proud and patriotic, clinging to an outdated ideal that was adopted in 1791.

I’m not sure it is gun laws that reduced the number of huntin’ n fishin’ blokes; and there also not in short supply once go west a bit... Sport shooting still seems to be popular (I have a cousin and uncle who are both sport shooters). Cats should be prohibited animals in Australia.

 

My cogent responses were exhausted many posts and many school shootings back (or was it just my patience?) but perhaps you don’t read all the posts given how much weight of opinion and empirical evidence is against you. I have now moved on to more blunt responses given logic seems lost on the Second Amendment zealots.

Oh, and just for the record, I don’t own “A Ferrari”. LOL. Do you perhaps afford more credence to contributors arguments based on the number of Ferrari’s they own? If so, I should be doing pretty well by that measure.
