Not quite,we had it both ways, with and without firearms, you have not and therefore cant really make an assumption. The only situation you can compare to ours is your prohibition era and for whatever reason prohibition was reversed,. Most Aussies are happy to live with the fact they don't have to feel unsafe going to the:shops, school, excersising, going to concerts, footy or any other form of inside or outside entertainment.
There are/were far more Aussie's posting on this thread in the first couple of hundred pages than there are now,its just that John and I are dumb enuff to keep on going!
Hey !! I started this US bashing gun shjt back in 1990 when I was at DEC .... upset many colleagues in the US who are VERY intelligent people BUT still feel the need for guns ***waves to Verrit who owns a 308GT4 and is on this forum*******
You could both be better mannered about it though. I suspect that others, like me, gave up because they aren't interested in emotive but distorted arguments, followed by throwing insults at strangers.
Perhaps but a lot of the strangers, particularly some in the beginning, came in half cocked to start with....
I'm quite happy guns aren't freely available in this country but if I lived in the States I would buy one for sure. I would also own a gun if I lived in Greece but for different reasons. We're not comparing apples with apples and our "solutions" are irrelevant
Valid point ..I'd own a gun if I lived in Northern Ireland ................and Carl would own a Welsh Corgi if he lived in Wales ..
Agreed. But it’s perfectly reasonable for this thread to exist, and for people to wonder and ask questions about the situation in the US. The US is, no matter which spin you put on it, an outlier on this issue. It’s also more than a little ironic for Americans to complain about people from other countries sticking their nose in and having an opinion on the business of another country. But Ian is right. It should be done respectfully, where possible.
I personally believe this thread should never have been started, what do we really care happens in the US, except when very young children are being killed
That was when I was young and foolish .......... now I'm just old and stupid I did post Rob Lay's response a few pages back which is what this whole forum is about
What is the sad indictment? Is it the fact that we believe in personal responsibility? I do not have to depend on police who will turn up 20 minutes after action is needed.
I do not feel unsafe going anywhere, quite the contrary. I carry the ability to protect myself and others if needed.
Well while his sources of information have seriously skewed his understanding of the situation I do believe our situation of crime and violence is sad given the very poor handling of it by government in recent years. It isn't the wild west but should and has been much better. But like you I have far greater safety by not needing to rely on police as an only means of defense. No disrespect to the police, I am sure they would write a lovely report on my untimely demise were I not able to carry a means to do so.
People who are willing to surrender their god given right to protect themselves and families, plus the ability to protect their country, are not the kind of people who recognize when they’re safe / unsafe. We call them “sheeple” in the USA. People who think big daddy government has their best interest and will protect and provide for them. When seconds count, police are minutes (usually hours) away.
