    So at speeds wouldn't that lift the tires off the ground just enough to lighten the contact patch?

    Here's the point. If you touch at speed there will be an upwards force transmitted to something.

    In our case it's the chassis. In most cases it's the body work/under side of the car which causes damage to that part. As our skid pads are sacrificial and slippery the force is minimized.

    If you are touching the skidpads at any speeds that matter, it is probably safe to assume the suspension is fully compressed so it would take quite a hit to pull the rubber off the ground.
