I posted some pictures in the "two-post lift" thread as the issues with lifting a 458 might be different from jacking he car up, a corner at a time. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/458-italia-488/441096-two-post-lifts.html Hockey pucks seem to be the answer, although they may be wider than the jacking (lift) point at the rear. It might be a good idea to modify the pucks so they can screw into the holes at the lift points. They are threaded, it seems. Andy
I'm down with the hockey pucks also. They work great on top of the floor jack pads. As far as lifting points, in the rear there are two open areas in the under panel where you can see a metal plate with a sort of indent in it - that's the jacking point for the back. In the front, I jack it up as shown, right at the corner, where the welds are. If you knock on the frame with your knuckles, you can hear where there is more substantial material. The ice hockey pucks from Amazon work fine on a 430- you can put them in a lathe and shape them to suit, not sure what sort of plastic it is, but it is strong stuff. You are better off with a low profile 3 ton trolley jack as it is easier to use than a small 1.5 ton version. Besides it lifts a lot higher. I lift my 430 in stages and put the wheels on railway sleepers so i can slide underneath it to do the manifolds. A lot safer than axle stands or on the jacks.
Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but the hole for the rear jack point on a 458 is threaded, can anyone confirm the size and thread type. I think it looks like M12 fine thread but wanted to check before nipping out to purchase a few bolts.
This pics show taking hockey pucks and adapting a 12mm , 1.75 thread bolt to be able to screw them to the chassis prior to sliding the jack under them, very easy to align the jack. Used a 1" Forstner bit to drill a flat recessed hole and used a washer. Then drilled a 3/8" hole(smaller than the bolt) to thread the bolt into the rubber, it is forced so it does not spin when you screw it into the chassis, it does not need to be tight, just simply held in place. Bolt length is not critical since the chassis is hollow in that spot. This ^ is excellent, i will order some pucks. Does anyone know where to get the metal ones for the 911 that were posted that have the strange shape (oval) on the rod part that goes up into chassis? Dealer? I need a set for a 996. I saw a f50 at dealer up on its own special system with rods that literally move up into the chassis and are fixed to the lift so it is very stable. I am guessing anything new 458/488/f8 all have taken same design on?
is the hockey puck idea to make a better jack footprint, or is it to elevate the car relative to the arms, so the arms (on a two post lift) don't hit the skirts? and so, for a 458, is the standard hockey puck the right diameter? Or do I need to lathe turn them down to a smaller diameter? And do you know the thread size of those holes at the jack points? Secondly, if the use of a puck is only to elevate the car so the arms don't hit the skirts (and not to provide a better footprint for the jack arms), why wouldn't one just drive the car up on (4) 2x10 's? Wouldn't that be a simpler solution? Much appreciated. I am sure that once I get it up in the air, it will be clear.. Happy New Year Image Unavailable, Please Login
The hockey puck is 3" diameter. It's just to give additional clearance up under there and to provide protection against the frame and some extra standoff from the panels and all that. Ray
Answers my question. I see Porsche-specific rubber puck/standoffs are available.. would there be a market for a Ferrari-specific high durometer 'rubber' jack point pedestals, of the perfect size and 12x1.75 metric fasteners? I may produce an injection mold tool and provide them at cost to Ferrari owners. Sell in set of (4). Any interest? If I find 20 or more owners want a set, I will make them. If there's any interest for a set of high quality Ferrari-specific jack point pedestals, let me know. I think they would be about $100/set of 4. They would be quality stainless hardware, highest grade molded polymer. Thanks,
I use these here to jack up all my cars, etc. They work great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002D1SHRW Ray Image Unavailable, Please Login
