This has probably been done before, I had a look but could not find anything. Sitting in the traffic on the M4 this morning, on the way into London, I was looking at the clear road coming out of the city, dreaming as you do of getting my car out of the garage and being on that empty road. A fantastic summer tune came on the radio and a question came to my mind. After the excitement of jumping in your Ferrari, warming her up and flying off down the road. Getting used to the fantastic sound of that engine once again as you hold her in gear just that little bit longer, for that fab sound effect bouncing off the buildings (yes weve all done it) As you leave the city and the traffic jams behind, the road is now opening up; the sun is getting low in the clear blue the sky. You reach for the on button on your stereo and select play. Now for the question. What is your favourite all time record that sums up that feeling, your car and the open road?

After I bought my 308 the stereo sucked. I made a concession to originality and bought a good CD/M3 stereo and good speakers. I'm 48 and I went and bought the Iron Butterfly compilation. Three versions of In-a-gadda-da-vida. Shore version -long version and 19 minute live version. The drum solo makes me want to go 100 mph. When I pull up next to one of these kids with rap playing so loud the base makes my fillings hurt I turn it up way loud. Surprisingly they tend to turn theirs down.
Jeff Beck: "Freeway Jam." But when I'm in a car with a lovely engine note, I don't play the stereo except in traffic. I'm not sure the radio in my father's 550 has ever been turned on! Certainly not by me! It's rare that I turn on the stereo in my 16V VWs....
I don't know about you guys, but my 1972 15 watt Blaupunkt cannot be heard over anything but idle speed. If I COULD hear the stereo, something like Whole Lotta Rosie (ACDC) would fit the mood. Ken
Some real classics! I bet we are all the same, not knowing if we should turn the music off to listern to the car. I just have the volume at a level so I can hear both. Best of both worlds!!!!!! Mark.....
Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations" or anything else! Righteous Brothers - anything! Beethoven - 9th Symphony I guess this dates me, but what the heck!
Anything 70's rock, deep purple etc... Top Gear did a feature on this of the Best Driving songs ever I think Queen ''Don't Stop Me Now'' won it
I think the Top Gear list was: Queen 'Don't stop me now' Mealoaf 'Bat out of hell' Golden Earring 'Radar love' Deep purple 'Highway star' Steppenwolf 'Born to be wild'
For rush hour frustrations, I like Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. I also liked the Freeway Jam mention earlier. Demagonia by Jean Luc Ponty is another cool jam for the highways. Also, Kraftwerk's Autobahn is an interesting tune. For totally breaking the law, Molly Hatchet's Flirtin' With Disaster is wonderful to speed to. Nirvana's Smell's Like Teen Spririt is also an excellant way to work out cramps in your right foot. Its not an extremely long song so you might have time to put the brakes on prior to any flashing lights in your rear view mirror. regards Ken
Whoa. I was going to post one of my Dean Martin suggestions but now I can see I'd probably get banned or something. I guess AC/DC is pretty Italian.
