Most car manufacturers are listed companies, with way more than 10% of the stock on the open market. Does that stop them? Will it stop Ferrari? Does it come down to which listing authority a company are under regards your "cannot afford to do otherwise"? Do Ferrari care? Do I have answers to any of my questions? Back in the day it was the other way around; sure we made 100 Mr FIA. Going off on a wild tangent here; what chance Ferrari making the 'missing' 250 GTO's as Jaguar (owned by NY listed TTM) are going to do with the 'missing' XKSS's?

Why it a LaFerrari 1 of 499 and not XXX/499 like in the past?

Did the owners really feel bad about not having a low number? The last number? Their Lucky number?

Probably just ease of production - they're making only one plate 530 times!

Supposedly the true number never gets revealed - Sometimes they make one for charity reasons, new VIP clients, the pope, etc. I know one guy who was at the factory to build the F60 America and then was offered a La Ferrari. Do you think they booted someone just to give him one? I honestly don't think so. One reason they don't make numbered plates for the cars. Everything is 1/499

Folklore suggests that in the past this may have happened. When Ferrari announced 200 288 GTOs is was also for homologation reasons (group B), but they readily admitted making 272 because of demand. The same where the F40 is concerned.
Today, as a publicly traded company, they would run into issues were they to produce more cars than stated.
The one guy you know may have been offered a car that another customer chose (or could not) take delivery of.
However, it is also a prized form of Ferrari-bashing to go on and on about this issue.

Can we get back to the appreciation of the cars themselves?

Hey Ryan Good news. Here's one that's available for less than 400K in a slightly smaller size :)

It's not Ferrari bashing; just quirks of a marque. And in this case the marque of the dreams of so many!

I'd put money on a parts supplier well before a dealer - in veracity of demand and knowledge of application. Generally accepted piece of intel (for business, investing, and military) is too look at the supply chain. For a good example the delays for the Boeing 787 were forecast well before "public" based on what showed up, or wasn't showing up, when.

A manufacturer of parts manufacture parts based on PO they receive. Not based on how many cars are to be manufactured.
They manufacture more parts than vehicles as there need to be spare, and many parts are likely to be common to LF and LFS.

    we will know soon enough

They're public... so what? If they make 700 cars, what are you guys going to do, sue them? LOL. "My $1.5M car is now only worth $3M because they made more than they said! I want my money back!"

They'll gladly take cars back at the price you paid to make you whole again, sell them to someone else for more, and they'll gladly boot you off the money-printing listing for the rest of your life. So long as they never fall below sticker, they could honestly make as many as they'd like. There are plenty of people lined up to take the cars.

Don't bite the hand that feeds. Ferrari pays you to drive a LF. Sue them for something like this and you might as well sue yourself.

I'd also point out that they said they would only make 500 LFs, but they didn't say they wouldn't make 5000 more cars that are just slightly different.

In short, they can build whatever they want and there is more or less no recourse for owners should they not like it.
