This light stays on momentarily when my (carb) 308 fires up , is it normal ?8 fires up , it goes off when the oil pressure gauge starts to move off zero . Never noticed this before , is it normal ? (!)

My '79 does the same. The red light comes on at start up and disappears a few seconds later as pressure is obtained.

Using an oil filter with the internal standpipe and an anti-drainback-valve (e.g., Baldwin B253, UFI 23-162-02, FPN 191993) will help reduce the average time to pressurization at start-up (assuming that you restart without always long disuse)

It is worthy of note that the low oil pressure light is totally separate to the oil pressure gauge. Although they share the same instrument on the dash they have their own wiring and sensors from which they operate.
