Don’t know why my replies are always mixed with the quotes. Im all thumbs literally and figuratively
Surprising thing is the Maranello and late 911s are about the same size. Could not be said of my old 69 911S, which was Dino 246 GT size.
It’s funny how perspectives change. I was admiring a testarossa recently, amazed how small it looked parked next to regular cars now! 993 is still pretty tidy sized, but not liked the oldies for sure. I was following a 912 the other day, that definitely looked like a toy!
Cars just keep getting bigger.. The Maranello is almost exactly the same size as my 928S4, same wheelbase 98.4" / 2.5m. The 993 is quite a bit smaller, with an 89" wheelbase, even shorter than a 355, but similar size as the 355 other than being not nearly as low. I'd guess the current 911s are still quite a bit smaller than current V12s, i.e. 812 superfast. Yes @Ffre92, testarossas seem tiny compared to current models, whereas in the day they seemed massive.. can't wait for my 512TR to show up!
My F512M felt monumentally wide, like driving a museum. But actually it’s about the same width as a 812 or an E class Merc. Have to say the 812 feels massively unwieldy on city streets also. But for its time the Testa series was insanely wide. I’m in a Huracan STO this week. I’d never have said it was as wide as the F512M. But it’s wider. Strange.
The biggest difference is the testarossa/512TR/M are over 5" lower than the 812 and 7" longer wheelbase. Looking forward to finally driving one myself.. maybe early September.
It's actually the 812 that has the longer wheelbase (272 cm vs 255 cm); it's also indeed taller (1276 mm vs 1130 mm). The testarossa is also 5 mm wider A maranello has a shorter wheelbase (250 cm), is "narrower" (193 cm) and about the same height as the 812; it's longer (at 455 cm) than the testarossa (4485 mm) but shorter than the 812 (4657 mm).
I think, like the 996/997 for a 911, the Maranello is a perfect dimension for its type of car. If you don’t live in a place with very wide roads, an 812 feels too wide in places where a Maranello feels fine. Amazing car though an 812 is
Thanks for correcting my mistake, I did mean the testarossas are 7" *shorter* wheelbase but it came out backwards.
Looks like whiteout (?sp) modified 575m made it onto BAT. He did a lot of good work on it from what I remember https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-ferrari-575m-maranello-25/
I had circled with him historically and legitimately tried to figure out a way to have my 550 and his 575.
A new touring. Interestingly it's longer, taller and narrower. Wouldn't have guessed that 20 years ago..... Image Unavailable, Please Login
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2001-ferrari-550-maranello-2 Looks like a good 550 with 42k for a fair £80 plus c£5 buyer's fees. Prices holding atm?
Holding, but no more than that. This is about what I got for mine 18 months ago, similar mileage, also RHD. Still a bargain IMO. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Indeed. Looking at my notes from when I was looking to buy/bought my 550, it's a mid 2015 price. After that was the rapid spike and comedown. Before that was a steady increase from probably £40k to £80k over a couple of years. It's also around the same as a good Testarossa would sell for with the same mileage, maybe a bit less. People like these cars, for good reason, but they made a lot of them compared with previous V12s. So, supply and demand. You can see that as people scramble around for any variation that shouts "special", like a WSR, even if it's really not special. Or a manual 575 HGTC, which with low miles I think would be close to a million now. Like watch special editions, where you think, wait, that's just the same as the normal one just with that tweak...and it sells for 10x more. People, eh.
I can't believe I missed out on how great the Maranello's are to have/drive. They feel like a 70's V12, small and powerful, much smaller in person than in photos.
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/13962028 great looking 550(though i would paint the wheels silver personally).
I've always loved this photo. The 599 is gigantic compared to the 550. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Does anyone have a rough estimate for transport costs from UK to US, import taxes and the discount US purchasers will apply to a foreign car?
Indeed, although there is an element of trickery in this famous photo. Look closely and you will see the 599 is artfully parked closer to the camera than the 550, on a parallel plane. Maybe someone wanted to make a point. If you were a crazed conspiracy theorist, which of course none of us are, you might also wonder why the shadow under the front of the 599 is a different, darker shade to that under the 550 despite the road being the same colour. Presumably both cars are equally opaque. I put this second point down to reflection off the lighter hued 599 onto the 550s shadow..so I don’t think the picture is fake, but it is deceptive.
Approximately $3,000 USD for shipping from Emden Germany to Baltimore, includes full coverage insurance. Import taxes are 2.5% and discount for a foreign car? Why is a discount required?
Because it’s difficult and expensive to title in the US’s largest market (CA)….among other minor reasons
Not buying that one anymore. Everyone that spends $100K+ on old Ferrari's should be educated enough to know a workaround state to title in. Probably more a fear of the unknown thing than anything else ("How do I know it wasn't wrecked in Europe? They don't have carfax!")
