Her new show will be, "Martha cooks for crooks" Lets see what kinda gourmet **** on a shingle" she can come up with? DL
Poor Martha, bad day for her today. Her stock crashed after the verdict was out, she probably lost 200 million on paper. Beeotch got played, LOL!
I heard she lost $500,000,000 in net worth as a result of the scandel - Due to the tanking of her company's price. She saved $80k on the stock deal. ouch
Greed is Greed though and thats what it cost her. You'd be suprised what Martha will be able to do with jail house slop on the next episode of Marthas Kitchen
William, (Martha's twin) Leona Helmsley ended up serving approximately eighteen months in a federal penitentiary for tax fraud. The funniest part was the FRONT PAGE of the NYPOST.. I'll never forget it.. **NYPOST HEADLINE * " IT RHYMES WITH RICH " I cant wait for tomorrows headline.. Gotta luv the NYPost.. New Yorkers hated her !!!! Patrick
A major "Byotch" she may be, I have worked for plenty of sons-*****es and that is not a crime. Those around her were not in chains and made plenty of money I am sure. Some poor group of kids with a nasty 2nd grade teacher suffer far greater.. In fact Martha's basic message, (as I see it) if you watch her on TV or read her magazine (not my favorites b.t.w.) is basically Do-it-Yourself taken to the extreme. Most folks presume it is all about "I'm Martha, rich and with good taste, let me show you what is right and proper". That is not the case. Sure, her projects are impractical and overly complicated but encouraging folks to actually do or make something, and express themselves beyond simple purchases is a good thing, 8^), as she would say.. Beyond that, break the law, get convicted by jury of your peers, and you go to jail.
Imagine that! A rich fat cat found guilty of crooked wheelings and dealings all in the interest of feathering their nest with more of the big bucks. Who would have expected such a thing?
I bought puts on the stock this morning when it was up 12%, closed down 22%. It was a good day for me, I could care less what happens to her. Nice to see someone brought down by their own arrogance.
The widow of of Harry Helmsley, one of New York's real estate greats. She was convicted of billing work done on her Connecticut home to one of her properties. She did her time. She was recently sued by an ex-employee and was back in court. She is a feisty old dame, and this time had public opinion on her side.
This really sucks........I've got 21 months left on my Martha Stewart Living magazine subscription. What if they they won't let her use that old mimeograph equipment in the prison to keep at least a newsletter going to us who depend on her? I mean, we've got Memorial Day, Fourth of July, etc. coming up. How will I know what cute little desserts to make, and how to decorate using dried plants, elmers glue and construction paper and stuff like that. I know! Appeal Martha, please appeal!
Leona Helmsley & Hubby were huge real estate tycoons. They own the prominent "Helmsley Hotel" in Manhattan. Leona ran the hotel like a tyrant... What a Bit*h..!! Martha is Betty White compared to her.. In the end it cost her... The NYPost rode her hard...!!! Patrick
Typical class envy... I am glad Martha is guilty, although I DO NOT believe she will spend ONE day in jail unfortunately. BTW, she only saved $50,000 on the transaction in question, approx.
Ok, Im going to be the dissenting voice here. I have always thought that Martha came across as a rather cold, perfectionist, witch. I always enjoyed Anna Gastheyer (sp?) playing MS on SNL, especially Martha Stewart Topless Christmas. But, all this reveling in her conviction is a little disconcerting. Imagine you were extremely successful (Id call $1B net worth successful), and you naturally make a lot of enemies either through shrewd business practices or simply your unlikable personality. You receive a call from your stockbroker saying to sell a stock because of the rumor that a big announcement will be made the next day that will probably make the stock tank. Trusting your stockbroker, and without verifying that the contents of this announcement are in fact common knowledge, or at least a common rumor, you sell. Two years later, youve lost hundreds of millions of dollars, are a convicted felon, and are facing 1-20 years in jail. Or, imagine that you were acquaintances with Michael Eisner and had $250k of Disney stock, he calls you up and says that on Saturday Disney will announce that it is going to close DisneyLand, DisneyWorld, and begin making gay porno. Would you sell your Disney stock today? HELL YES. You just broke the law. I must admit that I havent followed this case as closely as some throughout the last two years, but I find it unsettling that such a severe penalty could be handed down for a crime that basically harms no one. Whoever bought her stock, and then lost their shirt the next day should have a civil claim against her, but she should not get jail time. She is, IMO, the subject of a witch hunt, although that doesnt exclude her from being a witch in real life. OJ is playing golf somewhere as we speak, Ken Lay is probably sipping brandy in one of vacation homes, and Martha will see her probation officer Monday (per NBC news) before sentencing soon. Explain to me the justice in that...
SJB I think you are WAY off base. The whole point is that Martha DID know what kind of information she was getting. She did wrong, case closed. Also, your example of Eisner calling you up is not valid. No matter how you construe it, the simple fact of the matter is that acting on such information is wrong. Why? Because it is effectively STEALING. The UNFAIR advantage allows you to dip your hand into the cookie jar before everyone else. Making a civil claim against Martha does not make sense given that thousands of people would have to do so. That would tie up the courts and make other civil cases have to wait. OJ and Ken Lay got off easy, but them getting off does not make being right or wrong any different. I applaud the justice system for finally having the balls to convict blatant white collar crimes. In total, white collar crimes cost this nation BILLIONS of dollars per yer. There is no sympathy here my friend...
Good. It was justifiable homicide for the b!tch - disclaimer: Goldman was collateral damage. Getting back to the subject, you must understand - there are laws against this, otherwise: It'd be a loaded Poker Game with any players aside from the gambling suckers knowing when to build the pot up or fold - thereby allowing insiders to control micro-markets, profit, and if cards are played right, corner the macro-market. Thanks to safequards (laws), the gamble for greedy insiders is getting caught cheating. Martha got caught with aces up her sleeve. Case closed. The fact that she's a control-freak to begin with, is icing on the cake.
I don't think its right that people are so quick to call her a cold hearted byotch. The fact is, she is a business woman and up until this she was a darn good one. If she had been a man and this had happend people would be saying "well, thats ok, he was just doing business," but because she's a woman its, "what an evil, self serving, cold hearted female dog."
Actually, I think most people are missing the point. She was convicted for lying to the government. Simple as that. Had she been charged and convicted of a securities violation, its a civil matter, not a criminal one. Pay the fine. She tried to cover her ass on the deal and got nailed. As for jail term, unless she wins her appeal, she's going to the can. Fed guidelines for these charges require jail terms. She can be a b---- all she wants, just as long as she's an honest one.
Overall, I think it's sad that Martha was found guilty. Not because she didn't deserve that verdict, but because she did the things that she did. Sure she only saved $40,000 by selling off the Imclone stock, but as rich as she is, and as much as she had to lose if she got caught doing insider trading, she should have known better. I think that's what happens when you develope that "big shot" ego and/or your financial dealings get so big and so complicated that you have to hire people to keep track of them. Then the situation gets out of your control. Yet in the end, YOU are the one responsible for what happens because it is YOUR money. You can't reap the benefits of your big shot financial dealings and not be expected to be held accountable when something goes wrong. The pendelum has to swing BOTH ways; not just toward the direction that reaps the rewards. I've watched Martha's show many times. We even aired it awhile here at my TV station. One of the interesting common threads among her shows is that she tried to show small American businesses that continue their traditions in this day of offshore production. And she definately tried to get people to utilize their creativity and manual dexterity to build or creat something among her numerous projects. Sure beats being a couch potato and playing video games and getting fat while eating a double Jumbo helping of Lard King French Fries. Most kids today couldn't even build a birdhouse if you gave them some lumber and a few common tools.
