Many people shy away or are completely against cleaning engine bays, but with a little common sense and the right tools you can limit the risks.
Mask off and cover all high risk electrical areas first, this is a must, ie coil packs, alternator, etc. Aluminium foil is good for this.
Have a good inspection of the engine bay, are there any signs of paint peeling etc, if yes stay away from these areas.
Get the engine up and running at temp first, do not clean the engine with the engine running, keys in the ignition and doors closed!!!
You will need a good water based APC cleaner, clean water, microfibre cloths, a selection of detailing brushes, bucket of warm water.
Lightly mist the areas to be cleaned with the APC, leave to dwell.
Some detailers will foam the engine bay if safe to do so.
Rinse off with clean low pressure water or your spray bottle.
Now using the APC again, start from the top and clean all areas with the detailing brushes, pay attention to nooks and crannies, raised lettering any hard to reach area.
Again rinse off with clean water to remove all traces of the APC, dry down using the microfibre cloths.
Start the engine and get her warmed up.
Now you are ready to apply the dressing of your choice to the trim and engine bay interior, the choice is huge and down to personnel preference, but 303 Aerospace, Finish care, Autoglym, Meguiars, Chemical Guys all have engine bay / plastic dressings.
IF??, you can get Autosmart Finish this is a great spray and leave dressing for all surfaces that drys to a nice satin sheen, simply mist all over and simply leave to dry, job done!

Are the spots on shiny black plastics or matte finish black plastics? Most water spot removers should get the spots off, you could polish the area if they are not a matte finish. For the matte finish plastics you could try Dr. Beasleys products, they have a good line of matte detailing products that could help to remove the water spots.
