How could have I mistaken 0718 & 0728 ? the latter is non -pon toon also the original owner of 0718 was supposed to be Rodriguez' rival or enemy back in the day It's a shame 0728TR is not on www.barchetta.cc but here it is .... same car ? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=135501698&postcount=6
Just for clarity, 0425 wasn't a TDF per se, but rather one (and arguably the prettiest) of seven prototypes by PF for the new model that was to be the TDF. 0425 was unveiled at Geneva on the PF stand in '56. The whole story of that car is in the May, 2008 issue of Road & Track.
When the brilliant Sergio Scaglietti was honored at Pebble Beach (forget the year), I asked him about the Doheny/McAfee Monza, the only one, I believe, made with no headrest. He answered that he never built one without a headrest. As you might imagine, there was nothing much more to say to the Maestro, but remembered or not, I was told that was the way 0502M was delivered, and raced first at Sebring. I'm a newbie here, but when I figure out how to attach photos, perhaps I'll post some old ones from McAfee's, where I hung out in the mid-'50s. TC_
And I believe that's Johnny von Neumann in his beautiful 625TR behind the two Porsches. He was so impressed by Ricardo that he facilitated his coming to race at Riverside, where RR won in a Porsche. He was 16 and I think it was his first out-of-country race. He beat everyone on Saturday, but was protested, as the fuel was a bit hotter than allowed. Bob Drake, who finished second in a Cooper-Climax, no slouch himself, said, "Aw let the kid race. He's gonna blow us all off anyway." They did, and he did. TC
Reading a Ferrari World article from 1991 I learned that no less than 8 (!) GTO's took part in that race. Any pictures? Gr. Martin
TC, we all hope that you'll be able to post some pix soon. I knew Jack McAfee from his hot-rod days in his teens, and remember his shop on (I think) Ventura Blvd. I recall visiting him on a monday after race-day, where he had dumped a rear-end on a Ferrari at the start line. He was already tearing into it. I can't remember the car, but perhaps it was someone's 340.
In colour with additional cars. I have no note in my DB of copyright owner. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well, TC, now I feel dumb. Here I am rambling on about Jack McAfee, and then I realized your reference was to Ernie McAfee. That car must be 0502M, coming up soon at an RM auction.
What made it really confusing is, there was a time that Jack McAfee worked with and drove for Ernie McAfee (no relation), but that was before I was around, when Ernie's shop was on Cahuenga, in the valley. Actually, maybe Jack drove for John Edgar while working for Ernie, and Ernie prepared the Edgar car. As far as chassis numbers go, back in the day, we neither knew nor cared. I only found out about 0425's designated chassis number when I wrote about my old friend, what?,almost four decades later. It was just the 250 GT Competizione PF show car to me. I only know the serial numbers for it and another car I owned because others have told me. 0502M was just Doheny's Monza to us. Same with the 4.4. We never even called it a 121 LM back then. Now, of course, out of curiosity, I'd love to know what the serial numbers were for a couple other cars that owned me back then - not Ferraris. TC
