Do you have a footer set up?

That's about the extent of my knowledge of word

 

Select the line before and after it and hit delete. Now retype those lines. Or check for border elements. Put curson on line above and then in the menu, click on Format, Border. Select None.

 

BTW:

That looks like an incredibly dull subject

 

It talks about "oral" so it must be a fun paper.

can you click and "select" it? Then hit the delete key?

If not, I'd say it's a footer too. Or maybe you could go into the "show everything mode" (I forget how you do it in word - but it shows the formatting codes) and then just delete whatever it is that's putting that bar there.
