I have an 1987 328 GTB, number 69027, with engine model F105C-040. The distributor cap support for this engine is part number 126115 (you might be able to just make it out in the picture below). The parts diagrams say that the correct oil seal for this engine is 132453. However, take a look at the second pic below. That oil seal will not fit in this distributor cap support.

If I dig down a little, it seems like the distributor cap support has been superseded. Old part is 126115 ... new part is 133100.

    1. Am I correct in assuming that the oil seal listed in the diagrams (132453) is the correct one for the NEW distributor cap support (133100)?

    2. Also, the old distributor cap support was also used on the Testarossa (1987). For some reason, the parts diagrams for that Testarossa engine also say that the distributor cap support was superseded, but they list a different oil seal (132452), which I assume was the correct oil seal for the old support. Is that correct? Is oil seal 132452 the correct part for the older distributor cap support?

    3. Last question ... it looks like I can source two used distributor cap supports (more expensive now, but easier to source new seals) - or I could buy two of the older oil seals (cheaper now, but the seals are harder to find and a lot more expensive than the new seals). What are your thoughts on replacing my distributor cap supports with the new part? Is the new part a direct fit onto this engine?

    Thanks.

The seal size never changed. Someone just sold you the wrong seal.

All 3.2 seals are 35x45x7 and are clockwise directional. 3.4, TR and 412 seals are counter clockwise and will leak profusely.

Make sure you still do not have the rubber isolated cam extension. If you do no seal on earth will stop the leaks.

Help me with this. How would I tell if I have this?

Also, I ended up buying what I thought were updated cam seal carriers off of eBay. It ended up that they had the same part number (126115 - you can't see it in the pic, but both carriers below have the same part number stamped into them), but the dimensions of the hole where the seal sits were different: My original carriers have an ID of 45mm, the "new" ones have an ID of 47mm. The new seals I bought (BTW, three sets of seals all purchased from different sources, and all were the same with a 47mm OD). Here's a pic of "old" carrier and seal on the left and "new" on the right. The old ones seem to have some sort of aluminum insert pressed in. Also, my old seal has a clockwise direction arrow molded in, the new one on the right does not.

The 328 SPCs at MCP indicate that you'd need a copy of Ferrari Technical Letter 475 to know what's going on (I don't have a copy). My wild guess would be that on 328:

The old cap support 126115 uses the old seal 126105

The new cap support 133100 uses the new seal 132453

What is/are the part number given by the Sellers of the "three sets of seals all purchased from different sources"?

Also, on the two cap supports that seem to have the same 126115 part number on them (but use different size seals), are they hand stamped letters (done after machining), or are they cast-in letters? (If they are cast, it could be that 133100 was just a machining change to the original casting that they never changed.)

Ugh, went down the rabbit hole and now I'm even more puzzled. Service Bulletin 10-18 addresses this seal & carrier issue directly (starting at page 3 for the 328 and Mondial 3.2).

For the 328 in the USA starting with chassis 69639 (I have 69027 FWIW), the seal carrier was superseded (old = 126115, new = 133100). The new oil seal is PN 132453 (which I think I bought - three times). The SB then goes on to say this:

I read this to say that the new part has an OD of 47mm and should be used with seal carrier 133100. That said, the "new" seal carriers that I bought off of eBay are labeled "126115" and have 47mm IDs. And the 47x7x35 seals that I was sold all fit after popping the 1.25mm spacer out.

So, I'm as puzzled as ever.

Not sure if this helps (and I didn't read through them all) but there may be some information to be gleaned from the links below. My apologies if you've already seen these, good luck with the search, looking forward to hearing the final resolution.

No, there are two different Aluminum pieces in this discussion. After reading Service Bulletin 10-18, it looks like they added that Aluminum piece to the bore of 126115 to use the 45mm OD seal for just a brief period, and if you remove it from 126115, you can use the newer seal 132453, but only IF you add the 1.25mm thick Aluminum spacer 133066. See Fig 5, but in Fig 5 they should've said "A = P.N. 126115 with the special added Aluminum bore piece used on some engines removed if it was present":

Is your US version 328 engine SN between 988 to 1192 inclusive (indicating that it would've had the Aluminum bore piece added to 126115)?

This makes a lot of sense, and visually, my old seal carriers do in fact appear to have inserts. I've tried gently removing them, but no luck. And because insert & carrier both seem to be aluminum, heat doesn't seem to make it easier. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm in that range; my engine number is 01123.

Not really except that you'll probably have to drop the "gently" part ;). Since you've got an extra 126115 without that insert, you've got two chances to get one good one -- and maybe even if you destroy one, you'll learn enough to have a better result on the second one.

See, like a lot of F documentation stuff, it can eventually make sense. However, I'd guess that, near 4 decades after a Service Bulletin that calls for a special part, you'll have to make your own 133066 spacers, but they don't need to be super-precision. Alternatively, you could try to find a pair of 133100 carriers, but those are probably also NLA.
