I have an oil painting by an artist named Valentin de Zubiaurre. Late 19th to mid 20th century Spain.

His nephew, Leopoldo de Zubiaurre, authenticates his paintings, but the auction house I'm using is having no luck finding him, but I'm told he resides in Spain.

I know Spain is a big place, but his name does seem somewhat unusual.

I googled him, but don't get any helpful hits in English, and my Spanish skills are very poor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

His nephew is not called Leopoldo de Zubiaurre; his name is Leopoldo Gutierrez Zubiaurre (Zubiaurre being his mother's maiden name, which is always used in Spain after the father's family name. Gutierrez is a very, very common name).

Perhaps the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum may be able to help you; the article (link attached) mentions a donation of paintings by Leopoldo.

    Cheers,

    Julio

    Thanks very much,

I'll try to track him down.
