During engine out service, my mechanic discovered the cranshaft / torsion damper needs replacement.

The problem is, the part is NLA.

Since my car is fairly new (1991) with little mileage (23.000km = 14200 miles), I can only assume many more cars will soon need it, or already need this part.

Not sure what to do now. My mechanic has advised me to contact ATI and contract them to make a replacement. I can only guess, the cost of an one off part would be astronomical (even tho the OEM Ferrari part was nothing but cheap @ $2k).

    Pretty rare problem on TR.

Have used Damper Doctor in Northern California in past. Very pleased.

This issue is a quite common problem on the “old” Ferrari engines. The damper is easily repairable by specialist that can vulcanise new rubber into the damper.

Both the Damper Doc and www.hbrepair.com have replied that can do it and have experience with those. Rebuild cost at the later is $209 + shipping. I didn't get the quote from the Damper Doc yet, but I will probably use that specialist as it was recommended a few times on this site.

If you are in Warsaw (as in your Profile), is there no similar company in Europe to do the rebuilding?

It only costs $100 ir so to ship it to the US. Shipping will take 4 days ... so it is not much more than shipping to say France or Germany.

I would rather use a company that has an experience with those than look for a local one that may not have the experience. It is a no brainer, really.

For some reason very common on 550 and has been for a few years. While poking around on Damper Doctor website they specifically say they do not repair 550 units?

Maybe they don't stock the 550 cores? Their shop seems to have lots of dampers in stock, on core exchange basis.

I have shipped my damper to Damper Doctor in the US, but one thing that bothers me now is that they do not balance the dampers. That may create a problem if the damper comes less than ideal.

I have also contacted ATI for custom made unit - the minimum order is 10 units @ $550-$900 per unit, depending on how complicated the damper is (they would need to get one to get a final quote).

It would also take several weeks after placing a deposit.

Any automotive machine shop that does engine balancing should be able to balance it.

That is my plan. I would expect the shop that remanufactures them to send out a complete product tho.

Very few manufacturers balance their engines. Parts are made to a specification and they get installed.

I have found this. I have emailed them twice re this part, but got no reply. Since this post is from 2011, I concluded the item is NLA.
