I just bought a new 488 and during the PDI they found that the engine has an oil leak at the pan gasket. They have to pull the engine to fix it. Should I go ahead and buy the car? It scares me to buy that expensive of a car and have the engine pulled! Will it be the same as factory? What should I worry about? What's your opinion? Thanks

Why would you not buy it?
It's a frikkin oil pan gasket for cryin' out loud; replaced by an authorized dealer?
Shouldn't be that big of a deal. When my 458 was delivered, the instrument panel had to be removed to replace a problematic cluster.
When my brand new 430 arrived at the dealer, they got into a fender bender before they delivered it to me . They repaired it as new and I took delivery.
    Get a grip.......it's only a car. ;)

Of course you should buy it. It's not like a wreck or positive car fax. Resale won't be affected. After 500 miles in my 488 I did a pre track inspection at the dealer and they found a radiator leak. They had a brand new radiator overnight and fixed it no problem. That was 1000 miles ago and my car is running perfectly. It's one of the reasons cars that get driven are better than garage queens for future maintenance. All the kinks get worked out and repaired.

It's a gasket leak. Dealers remove engines from Ferraris all the time. Buy it. You'll love the car.

I would still buy it but sucks you have to remove the whole engine just to do an oil pan gasket!

If you don't trust your mechanics to pull the engine, why would you buy the car?

Stuff like this happens all the time. Why do you think the Dealers do a 2 day inspection of the car when it first arrives to them? They fix all kinds of stuff that you never see.

It's a car. They leak. They break. Sometimes they even get dented or scratched. They get fixed.

    It's not a newborn baby.

Its just metal and rubber and fabric. The sooner you get used to this idea, the sooner you will stop worrying about it and start to enjoy it.

    New 488s?

And if the next one has a leak, does he walk again?

Its a car. Fix it. Drive it. Break it and fix it again.

Honestly at some point someone is going to wonder if changing the oil will decrease the value because its not original from "the factory" anymore.

Enzo is dead. They are just expensive cars now.

Reminds me of hearing people say they love their car. To me, that's not having your priorities straight and it's way out of wack. I like my cars - I love my wife.

Yeah, exactly what Bob said. Oil pan gasket is trivial. I like that: "Fix it. Drive it Break it and fix it again." Couldn't say it better.

We all have opinions. However, Ferrari mechanics remove engines all the time for various reasons, so that, in and of itself, is not anything to worry about. What I do find interesting is how sometimes it is " just a car", and other times, some contemplate suicide because of a dent.

Bottom line: If is is a certified Ferrari Dealer, no problem. Best

The car must be fixed. They should do that ASAP. Once the car passes inspection, they should let you decide what you want to do.

    Just buy it.
I guarentee if you burn the first set of rubber off the car in the first 1000 miles your face will look like the Joker. SMILE from EAR to EAR. 488 /458 or what ever rocks with your world.

I got news for you. Any high end high revving monsters like these have leaks/weepage.

Now go get her and have fun. That's what they are for....

Wouldn't make me happy but I agree. As long as it's fixed by an authorized dealer and done right under warranty.

Are you talking about this area? Please see my attachment. it's right under the engine. I found this oil leak from the nuts when the car only has 600km on it, but oil doesn't drop, only leak. Dealer said is not a big deal. They will replace the nuts for me soon.

When they did the PDI on my Aperta in February, I had an oil leak and they had to pull my transmission. Everything was back and forth with the factory techs and the repair was approved and parts fast tracked from the factory. Damaged parts were sent back to the factory. No dramas with the car - this stuff happens. Ferrari handled it very well though and were very conscious of not delaying delivery of my car. I had no problems accepting the car and in the first week I did about 1,500Km and thank god for my radar/laser detector!!!

    where are you located?

When you say "oil pan", these cars are dry sump - i.e. I'm guessing it's the oil pump seal?

It can be frustrating for sure, however I would not let this ruin your experience or perception of the car. As for waiting on parts, particularly for issues caught pre-delivery, I know they go through a lot of back-and-forth to investigate and confirm. I'd also imagine/could speculate that the very parts you need are likely not in a local spares store but will probably come off the line given where these cars are in their lifecycle.

I would hope that your dealer and the relevant SpA distributor (FNA, FNE, et al) are trying to keep you happy. One friend had his car arrive from the port only to be held up for the fuel system recall, delayed delivery a couple weeks. Now a distant memory.
