The Gullwing is currently "the Dow Jones Industrials" of the collector car market. As with any market there are There are items that outperform the benchmark and those that under perform it and then there are the outliers that do not even seem to fall within the market. Just as the DJI changes it make up over time, the collector car benchmark has and will change. I do not know what the next one will be, but don't believe it will be the Countach. Gullwings were built large enough numbers and only two distinct versions (alloy) that they appear at almost every major auction and the sales can be readily tracked and used to asses the "health" of the current market. This will not happen will the CT due to the low volume built, the large number of versions and the infrequent auction appearances.

What do 512bbs go for today?
512m makes me laugh - must be the bug eyes. My 94 512tr - now thats the perfect TR in my eyes!
I've grown to love my Anny - I still prefer the pre 88.5 clean body look but I won't sell my car unless something truly special comes along -like laf

512BB is in short reply; Countach and 512BB has very similar result as a car, but they achive it's goal technicly diffrent path.

    or...

I wish BB had door from Countach and I wish Countach had engine lid from BB

In reality; BB is easy version from Countach, but no means downgrade, just diffrent.

Excited for RM in February as so far 5 cars from every configuration are scheduled and 4 more are rumored to be added prior to date. This will be interesting to say the least as far as values are concerned :)

Car was sold in 2006 if I recall for about $85-85K then. Mileage up 4k, but still low.
Picts shows same dash separation issues that was then.

Seem to need interior and some cosmetic work but this sample looks good overall or at least as good as it did in 86 from the pictures.

100K is not the real price. That could be a nice sale depending on where the reserve is.

I believe I have seen this car several years ago, and it is just a few miles away from me. If anyone is serious, I can inspect.

True, there are @ 10 different Countachs advertised for sale in different countries around the world, another 5 upcoming to auctions, and another half-a-dozen that are discreetly available and can be purchased privately. That adds up to more Countachs available at one time than I have ever known. There also seems to be a bit of an effort to cash-in. Even though the perception is that the cars are very valuable and represent a rare opportunity, the reality is that some are being pushed quite hard. By way of example one car recently being discussed on another thread has been offered to me by four (4) different people!

While it can be debated whether this many available is a high volume, define "ever". We have a saying in our house about speaking in absolutes or near-absolutes.

I recall seeing high volumes of Countaches available at different times. I think I could pull out a DuPont from 1990 and see more than a dozen at Prestige in Miami alone. This could shoot off in different directions of course, but there it is.

  17. Most are sitting in their cars for something around 60k-150k that have been long term owners. Some more, of course, but the point is I would expect way more to be available than a possible 25 or so cars on the planet at the current prices.

So how do they avoid capital gains of, lets say, 500k? Use the money to buy more cars?

As far as I'm aware, that is a one time exemption on a 1031. There are other options that I am aware of. Consult your accountant.

Or, time it with the sale of an asset you would have a loss on to offset.

But really, for all those years people moaned about putting the money in a depreciating asset and were selling cars for the same or less than what they paid, isn't paying the tax on a net gain of 500k better than no gain at all? Look, I HATE taxes, but unless you're going to throw out the tax code, what is your choice? Pass it on to your heirs and you're just going to hose them on the tax.

  20. Yes. You can do a 1031 tax exchange, but it is very specific & will require an attorney that specializes in it. The form is a joke, but if not done correctly can become a real mess. You will have to exchange it for a like kind item, ie another car(s) for an equal or more amount. Not real estate! Ultimately you or your heirs will pay the tax. I've done some in real estate. The interesting thing is the money can not hit your account, at all. Once you sell the property, the money goes into the attorney's account. Something that is not settling, so do your due diligence on who you use.

One of the factors feeding UK prices is that there is no tax payable on profits from cars, if you are a private buyer/seller. It's because cars are classified as being depreciating assets with a limited lifespan.

So people currently see it as an interesting place to make big gains, and keep all of the upside, completely legitimately

That would be good to see, and I bet Prestige had considerably less than a dozen cars at the time.
