I can remember a yellow LP400 in UK being asked £40,000 something over 10 years ago.

this is very similar to property (real estate) prices in central London..back in the 90s what now costs many millions of £ could be bought for less than a few hundred thousands..well, i guess they are called good assets :)

Although they are more known for muscle-cars, they achieve good market values when they consign great Italian cars.

    In recent times I recall they've sold a 1949 Talbot-Largo T-26 Grand Sport Coupe Franay for $1,650,000, a 1998 Ferrari F300 F1 car for $1,700,000, and 1989 Ferrari F40 (Eu/ROW spec) for $1,072,000.

  4. I don't remember anything Lamborghini, Detomaso, or more mainstream Ferrari (TR, 348, 355, 308 etc) doing well at BJ.

Perhaps true, but the Countach's production numbers are more similar to that of the F40 (which did well @ BJ), and the Countach is much rarer than any of the cars you've mentioned - hardly mainstream.

As more Lamborghinis come to auction, I bet BJ will consign more of them, and the market will speak.

As discussed earlier in the thread, I'm of the opinion that genuine buyers will find a good car no matter the venue or the time it goes over the block, and will nominate value with their wallets.

  6. If I was selling a muscle car or street rod BJ would be my first choice in auction houses. The only thing foreign I would trust them selling, if it was my money, is a VW bus. Certainly if you went the no reserve route. I agree buyers will find the car, wherever it is. The problem at BJ is the overall crowd. You can not run 5 Oldsmobiles, 10 Camaros, 2 Buicks, 18 Fords, and then expect someone to buy one of those high maintenance foreign jobs for top dollar. :)

With Joe on this one, dont think many Countaches are slipping thru the cracks anymore.Auctions are posting their uppcoming cars waay ahead of the actual events, and a potential buyer in this category( not F40 Money, but still more than your avg used 348ferrari) is following, and knows exactly whats coming up and wil prepare accordingly if the car is on his Color miles and so on wish list,he will figure out a way to make his bid, phone, broker ,grandmother in Florida and on and on. Not saying its a huge supply and demand issue, probebley a well balanced buyer / seller nmbr at the time, but those who are in the market of buying ,are prepared, and imo wich auction house they list at, is of no importance.

Whilst I agree with everything you are saying, I don't think the car we are discussing had any excuse (venue, crowd, whatever) besides a negative Carfax.

Countach buyers will show up to an auction on a Potato Farm in Idaho if its a nice car.

Check this black Countach QV, they (Gullwing) are asking $649,500. Looks to be Saudi spec.

The ultimate Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole
One of just 13 US legal downdraft examples
    imported in 1986

This 1986 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole is an extremely exciting find. It's one of just 13 carbureted examples imported to the United States in 1986. It comes with a 455HP V-12 with six downdraft Weber carburetors. The extremely fast and powerful four valve Countach is by far the most desirable and sought after version of the model. Black with beautifully preserved tan interior. It's dusty from sitting for 5 years but the paint is still shiny underneath. It's absolutely all original with 18k miles. Since it was last running 5 years ago it will need servicing. Don't miss the ultimate Countach for only $649,500

Interesting sideskirts, also, are the seats shorter in the backrest,? normally they reach 3/4 of the way up on the window trim , (mine does) also, was there any modification done to the engine in order to comply with Epa/dot?
    Thanks

  12. Those are the ugliest side skirts ever put on a Countach. Something is different on the seats, the padding above or? Mine is up on a lift, or I would go look at it. Usually a convertor exhaust/air pump was about all engine wise that was done for epa. Amazing something like this has been sitting.

Seat was lowered. Shame about the bumpers and skirts. Bumpers take more work than one thinks and parts are getting rare. Unfortunately those skirts are welded on with heavy brackets and it takes a good bit of work to revert it back to the original round body design. It's all worth doing but not cheap. Some DD slipped through without modifications in 1985. In 86 some came with the large bumoets and smog equipment including a large aluminum air box. All I this needed grey ignition wires to handle the smog equipment.

The seat thing is indeed interesting,i checked my own car again, and my passenger seat is down in line with the molding, but the driverseat is 3/4 way up( similar to black car/ picture posted) perhaps this is somthing the factory offered based on your height, lets face it ,if you are more than 6 feet tll,the seat adjustments is indeed useless, being it will always be back and down as far as possible, anyway thanks for the other info, interesting to see what this car sells for.

One of the White w/White Countach 5000QV's that I considered before I bought mine, had the seats lowered.

I might have some photos of it in my archives. I'll take a look.

This is a known car, its not a "Barn Find", just neglected in a garage. Now that the cars are going up in value, more people are restoring them, but a restoration project like this makes no sense at the highly optimistic & overrated asking price.

Lowered seats? As in more head room? Now this sounds exciting. Does anyone know how it's done? I am about 6'5 and I drive my countach often so I could use a little more headroom.

Not sure if everyone noticed but the RM Andrews Anniversary car sold this past Saturday for $451k US including the buyer's premium. I personally view this type of sale and result as the "Best Case" scenario where you have a dedicated single owner collection sale with one of the top ranked auction houses in the world and very low mileage proper car being presented.

Meaning, it would not be realistic to duplicate the result easily. It certainly provides some guidance but is not the new definitive value set for the Anniversary cars. And it doesn't mean comparable cars couldn't or aren't selling for more privately. I feel you have to be very careful about using one result as a deciding number.

    IMHO
