Could be worse. I drive a muscle car sometimes and every jackass with a dollar and a dream yells "WANNA SELL IT?!?!" at me.

 

Are you guys kidding? A friendly call to to your house from a person interested in your car,or worst case ,windbagging, are you guys hiding fom the mob? Witness protection program annyone?

 

I think frienly calls may have been OK in the 50s or kumbaya and love periods. But nowaday you dont know who is calling you, friendly or not. Unless the guys disclose who he is and how he knows me and I can relate, unsolicited calls about personal business or assets is off limits.

For all I know it could be some hit guys calling trying to figure if he has spotted the guy who has what he thinks you have.

 

I guess my scandinavian Pippi longstocking background puts me in the 60s love and peace category.

When that happens to me I typically yell back. Sell it??? Hell I just stole it!

Well, it worked for me 39 years ago! When I was 14 I started looking for my first car. A 1971 Mustang Mach 1. Driving around Muscatine, Iowa where I lived, I noticed one parked in front of a house. I walked up to the front door where a fella was painting inside and asked who owned the car. It was his, I asked him if he would consider selling it and two weeks later I paid $3,200.

 

Yup, there you go,probably works just as good today, as far as phone calls to my house,if am watching Cleveland Brown, i am hanging up on the guy, no matter how much he likes my car.

 

There are three types of people.... people that make things happen, people that watch things happen and people that wonder what the f_ck happened. Nothing wrong with doing what it takes (within the law of course) to get what you want.

I like it as well. I think I'll borrow it for a moment. Persistence combined with patience wins.

 

Same in CA with all the stalking and home invasions. Recently one of my tenants was victim to thieves posing as PG&E. Neighbors thought nothing of it.

 

I know your pain. I had a break in on a tenant as well, saying they were the police. Times have changed everywhere, and direct contact is not a good idea. A letter is best. I get one ever so often (some are downright comical) on different properties. I used to be the one calling & sending letters. 99.99 % of the time it was futile, but that .01 % panned out.

 

No question,nocking on sombodys front door,is absolutely depending on where you live,A friendly phone call to my house at 8 pm,is just fine,unless i am drinking beer next to the Countach, ( in the garage)

Nils. It is a very bad idea wherever you live in today's world. I don't know what kind of current reality you live in , but unless the party on whose door you are knocking is known to you, I do not recommend it. The are several more appropriate (& productive) ways to make an approach.

 

This is all nonsense!! What has happened to humanity if we can't even be open to new people and opportunities. I will tell you that I have met more people being open to the Grace of God then being a hermit crab in fear of every interaction.

 

Nobody is suggesting that.

We are open to new people & opportunities every day of the week. But in 2015 there are appropriate ways to engage someone you don't know. That's the discussion, and its clearly one most feel strongly about.

 

Joe ,you have to get out of Durban, it sounds sooo unsafe,i spend my time between Florida , Oslo , once a year Portofino / st margaritha, and my favorit place in the whole world ,Colorado , duude, get out of there, sounds horrible.

 

talk about what the F happened! Peter lives down the massacre school. I live 15 mn from the Petit home invasion torture and massacre. In fact before i moved i was down the next street!!
So the saying may be cute but the reallity is sometime ugly. We have been scolded here
