Based upon the front bumper I'm guessing it was a FI USA car,,,and short of being a basket case,,,it seems very cheap ??

This is for sure a european car which was federalized, this front bumper came with the QV, never on a LP500S.

VIN and former (pre-US) history known?

  6. At that point they all were grey market cars. I've seen that bumper (or one that looks very similar?) on other fi 5000s cars.

It does look cheap, especially for a car that had a rebuilt engine & paint. I get the fuel injected part, but what is missing? I went to the past Louisville Mecum auction. Almost everyone that worked at it was a volunteer. I always thought everyone was paid. Most of the cars that I saw, did not bring much or hit the reserve. A Ford GT with about 1200 miles sold for 250K (I thought that was a good deal) but a 67 427 tri-power Corvette pulled only 70k which didn't hit reserve. Really almost every car I saw, I could have duplicated the same or better results with a terrible add on eBay, and not pay the fees. Regardless, it was a fun day & if I was in a buying mode I could have found something.

If you're selling your CT at a Mecum and dropping reserve at $200k, there's probably a reason. Lack of photos is always concerning.

    Chris,

I saw the Ad 2 weeks ago with the two (2) images only.

Right then, alarm bells started ringing in my head.

Anytime I see an Ad with no interior images and no images of the engine, I am worried.

I then started to read the Ad.

I noticed certain key words & phrases that got me even more worried.

They are "Norwood Italia", "New paint by Stuart Paint and Body" followed by "estimated $20,000 invested"

I then noticed that the highlights of the car's "20-month restoration" included "Back-up camera mounted on dashboard" and "New tinted windows" and I knew that my concerns were not unfounded.

Finally I noticed the car's Texas plate "WUT DAT" at which point my concern turned to outright fear

That this much-modified Countach brought what it did (if true) in today's selective market is amazing to me.

I agree that "back up camera" and "tinted windows" are not great selling points for a Countach. But I don't understand your correlation between "outright fear" based upon a silly vanity plate ? I am only guessing,,,as I have not inspected this car in person,, that it had many needs. If there is anyone on this site that has inspected this car I would be very interested to hear their opinion on the condition. I think it's unfair to form an opinion on another person's vehicle without inspecting it or having a qualified representative inspect it. As I stated before, for a running and driving Countach @ $231k, all in, it just sounds like a great deal !! Shame on me for not paying attention to that sale. Please show me a better car for sale in the world for less than that.

I think you missed the humor in my post, it was made entirely in jest.

Although I too have not inspected this car, I agree, $231k for any Countach sounds like a great deal.

If have seen a few of these FI converted cars over the years. Would this have been completed at the factory or was the conversion done here in the U.S. after delivery ? I'm thinking if it was converted at the factory, these cars would be few and far between and make them somewhat valuable going forward. I understand it was not the optimum set up from a performance standpoint but I feel anything completed at the factory in low production numbers usually translates to higher collectability and higher value ?

  12. I think the fi version production is around 35 cars.

I understand that some were done at the factory, but I'm not sure how many.

John (Supercar Guru) knows, I believe.

This car was not Pebble Beach material but I did see the car when it was at Stuart's and Norwood Italia. Just because it was not marketed correctly it seems to have been undeservedly been vilified as a 'wart' on the Countach market. I believe the FI and front bumper are factory original. In fact this possibly being a rare combination makes it even more unique. It seems that even experts seem to all too quickly defame cars that don’t sell for the dollars that can bolster the market or justify a missed opportunity. So it had “tinted windows” and a “back up camera”! Such outrageous mods that the car should be devalued by tens of thousands of dollars? This seems to happen all too often. The body was taken down to bare metal and I will post picks. Stuart’s does good work and so does Norwood Italia. Norwood Italia works on many Countach’s and should instill confidence, not worry. This was a presentable, solid Countach, that with only a few dollars spent would have even the Countach Police applauding the fact that it’s original factory spec has been maintained. Yes, you can spend just a few dollars on a Countach and still see the benefit.

Thank you for sharing, if only the Sellers had shared this kind of information, the car might have brought more!

As regards my remarks above, let me clarify:

    1. They were made in jest as Ive already posted.

    2. They were made AFTER the sale, and as such had no devaluing impact whatsoever on the sale result.

FYI, the car that sold at Mecum was NOT a factory Fuel Injected car, and by the looks of it not even one of the Lamborghini North America cars.

Really, the car should be converted back to its original European specification. This could easily be $25,000-30,000.00 depending upon the price of original Weber carbs, etc.

I will have to publish the list of the original FI factory cars and the original FI North America cars.

02/1987 Lamborghini 5000 QV Goldpackage (only 2 built)
    As new
    13.037 km
    White/white
    EUR 1.210.000
    VIN ZA9CA05A1HLA12110

This particular Countach was designed for the American market and was equipped with a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system providing a massive 414 bhp (EU versions had still Weber carburetors).

    World traveler
The car originally left Italy in 1987 for the USA and stayed there for almost a decade after which it was shipped to it’s new owner in Japan. In 2014 we came aware it was for sale but far from it’s original state. We shipped it back home to it’s creator in Italy to receive a total restoration at Lamborghini’s newly formed Polo Storico division.
It took a full year to be restored to it’s original state by experts at the Lamborghini factory using original parts and it is now certified as authentical vehicle by Lamborghini’s technical committee.
During the restoration process something unique came to our attention, this very Countach (of which 610 were built), was one of the two ever specially built “Gold Package” versions, meaning that all door- and interior parts of the car are gold plated!
For those who notice that this Countach doesn’t have it’s wing anymore; we took it off because it was an aftermarket addition. The Countach was anyway designed in such a way that it doesn’t suffer from aerodynamic lift.
For collectors and investors, this is absolute an interesting car to include in their collection.

This was a great topic because many owners/dealers/etc really are shooting themselves in the foot. Although no exotic is like a fiesta which can be moved over night there are many Countach's which seem like they couldn't be given away! IMO this is the perfect time for someone to snag a CT.

    Exactly!

Here is my post in another section that concurs with your latter point: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/145032332-post2909.html

I'm unapologetic about my view that many entities who have Countachs for sale couldn't tell the front end of an S1 from the back end of a Downdraft, and their erroneous representation of these cars does the overall market no favors whatsoever. The market soon perceives that these Sellers add no value and offer no resource along with the cars, so they end up passing on them at any price, and the cars sit.

Of course, some of the cars being offered have a status that doesn't help things either, because today's market is very selective.

That said, there is a silver lining to every cloud, and I agree with you, some great deals are both happening and available. My recommendation to anyone who has Countach ownership aspirations at this time would be, pay attention.

This particular car had red interior back in October 2015. I saw this Countach in person in a workshop around the factory.
